commercial water heater

Thanks for all the info. I have a laundromat with 36 washers. 3 50lb front load
11 35lb front load
18 18lb front load
4 top load

When I am busy on the weekends sometimes all the washers are going. Many times 1 customers will load up 2 50lb and 4 35lb and start them at the same time. Could the tankless keep up with out storage? I am NJ.
I currently have (2) 199,000 BTU boilers and a 225gal storage and it seems to just keep up.
Thanks

    commercial wh

Also check out the Munchkin with a storage tank. I have no experience with this setup, but I like the advantage of having the burner and tank as separate components. Servicing would definitely be easier, and you could keep the components separated if needed ( for venting or space requirements)

  • SS & Laundromats

I've been told to stay away from stainless when it comes to laundromats. "The chlorine vapors that creep around those places will eat that stuff up in short order and the Mfg. warranty won't cover it." I don't do commercial applications but I do have experience with the Polaris. I wouldn't reccomend them for this application but perhaps someone elce will chime in and set me straight.

I would think this would be a job for a bank of wall hung on-demand heat sources such as Runai or Takagi. Both solid units.

Voyager makes the super -e laundromat water heater for Natco. here is the link
    http://www.nationalcombustion.com/industri.htm#Coin Operated Laundries

We used this in a small laundromat ( 20 washers) and it is good for a situation where there is no space for a boiler room. ( sealed combustion-- 0 clearance)

For a larger store, I would recommend Hamilton Engineering

    http://www.hamiltonengineering.com/evo99/quicktour.html

With 2 heaters you can handle weekend traffic when you may have 20 washers drawing simultaneously, while during the week one can easily handle the demand.
Also, this system gives you a backup. If one heater goes down, you can still make hot water.

    AO Smith Cyclone

and Bradford White ef series, http://www.bradfordwhite.com/pdfs/commercial/800.pdf
are both excellent commercial water heaters and well suited for a laundromat. I would recommend against any of the residential schemes suggested here, however. Proper selection of the unit(s) is more important than which brand of commercial water heater you chose. With all the necessary load information, BW has a good selection program in their website.

    EVO / Munchkin

Hamilton Engineering EVO looks like a Munchkin VWH in blue.

    Hamilton

Most of Hamiltons products I have seen are actually Lochinvar with Hamiltons name on it. I have not seen the EVO but I think all their stuff is bought out and then packaged on a skid. I would build one up myself if I were you. Good luck.

Having worked on Steam and Water Heaters in Dry Cleaners, Commercial Laundries, Pools, I take exception to the fact that Clorine or any other chemical is the main cause of corrosion. Having work in industrial plants with many corrosive materials I have found that the main reason for corrosion was that the equipment was not fired correctly and was not venting correctly. Once these were fixed, corrossion problems became minimal.

    ON demand....

One of the best apps for commerical on demand water heaters is the Laundromat. I've done laundromats with as few as 3 units and as many as 8. Sealed combustion direct vent with the Rinnai's. 12" horiz vent separation. room saving...In many cases they create square footage. The advantage is that on Sat am when all the washing machines are going you may run at capacity, but on Tues am when only one machine is running you are using only a part of one unit. Go to www.rinnaisolutions.com....tools...calculator and fill in the poundage of the various machines. It will size with and without storage. Another benefit. If a unit breaks down you are not out of business as the systems are modular.

    laundromat

I don't see how these tankless can keep up with demand unless u have a storage tank. The flow rate is not large enough to meet the demands of large washers. A 50lb washer requires 20 gallons of hot water for one machine.

Anyone work on a laars HWG 9600?

    Sure they can...

just size it properly. Keep in mind that you are talking timed cycles. If you have six Rinnai's delivering 4.5gpm at 70f rise and are washing with, what, 110f you are going to need the capacity of 4 units for the minute it takes to fill the 50 lb machine at the 20 gal. That leaves 59 more minutes they can deliver hot water elsewhere.

I did a job where the sizing said 8 units. With agreement of the owner and plumber we went with six and sized the gas line, water line and piped it to accomodate 8 units. The extra two have not been needed.

IF, you end up in a situation where the short term draw exceeds the fill capacity of the system it just increases the fill time slightly. No biggie in my experience, nor in the experience of the owners who have these systems.

If you look at the actual time of use of washing machines in laundromats, on-demands are the perfect solution. Only make the hot water when the tap is open...unless...I have worked on sizings for large commercial laundries that have required multiple units with storage, as you suggest. Go to the rinnaisolutions.com site and do a couple sizings. It will size both with and without storage. Pretty neat system actually.

    Big machines!

I can put a system together for you that will meet your needs. But...I'd like a bit more info. Do you have the Make, model of the machines as well as the temp you want to deliver. You can email me that info at the above address or you may call me at 617 834-8751 to discuss. Thanks!
