Removing a broken fitting

and smash it out. Smack it on the hub while backing with another hammer. One inch will smash in two or three shots. Once one hub cracks(if it doesnt outright break) move to the other hub and smack that. It will fall away from the pipe. Careful not to egg the pipe.

Broken CI fitting
I broke a 1" street el off trying to remove the riser pipe to a radiator, I used heat, anyway the thing snapped. I need to remove the other 1" fitting it was threaded into, to allow me to relocate the radiator over a foot or two. Any tips for removing old CI fittings?0 -
you can try more heat
and a broken nipple extractor. Rigid and others make good tools for this job. Alternatively, you can weld a short piece of square stock into what is left of the broken fitting and apply a wrench to the bar stock. Lots of localized heat will help.0 -
Heat till red?0 -
i presume that you have done this already?
In that case an internal wrench if the broken off piece is inside or a sawzall to weaken the piece that is left if it is outside, would be my next approach.0 -
If you decide
to smash it out ... look at the fitting and try and hit it on the seam. They break quicker on the seam.

out
Use a hacksaw blade and cut the broken fitting from the inside, being careful not to damage the radiator threads. A sawzall (in my hands anyway) is a little out of control.
Cut two such grooves, then take an old screwdriver and pop out the narrow piece between. Take the same screwdriver and bend in the remaining cut edges. The now crushed fitting should fall out. If rust is an issue, the grooves will allow penetrant in as well.0 -
usually just cracked em and spun em off

broken fitting
If it is a cast iorn fitting , and , you have room , you can bust the fitting with a hammer. If not, cut a small chunck of the fitting that is broken off out with a sawz all. Use a hammer to colaspe the piece . Then just un screw it.
If you have to ; cut down the sawz all blade.
Cut just thru the piece you wanna remove. Teflon tape the s**t out of the replacment fitting , nipple , what ever .
Allways works for me.0 -
Also
If its a street ell that is busted, back cutting and chiseling wont work. Its malleable and WILL NOT collapse. It will come out in pieces(if you're lucky. Its NOT like a broken nipple.0
