Whole House fan

who has a whole house fan that she loves to use in the shoulder seasons. It's old as dirt and the motor finally went. I cannot find the motor and the company that made it no longer exists. I told her she should just get a new one, however..... the old one was a verical WH fan that was mounted in the gable blowing out into some louvers. Everywhere I look they only have the ceiling mounted ones. She would prefer to replace the gable mounted one. she has an aversion to people cutting up her ceiling me thinks. My helper "The mighty Theodore" stands by with a sawszall in hand and a maniacal look in his eyes. He could do it but she wants to find the old. Does anyone have a resource that sellls the verticals??? Thanks WW

Try Grainger
last I checked they had just about everything for ventilating large spaces, which usually use fans in this configuration. Go here for some models that look like they might work:
http://www.grainger.com/
Search for "Exhaust Fans". I saw models in the 24 to 30-inch range, there may be bigger ones. I believe Grainger also carries many different types of replacement motors too- if you give them the make and model of the one that blew, you might be able to save yourself the trouble of ripping the old fan out- not to mention all those Sawzall blades. The Ted will just have to slake his thirst for destruction elsewhere ;-)
Make sure that whatever fan you install does not downdraft the chimney! All Steamed Up, Inc.

This one looks a lot like the old ones that installed in gable end walls. Also available in 36". Have two of the old ones around here and don't really need either, but they're heavy and awfully bulky to ship...

In my opinion any of the off the shelf whole house fans can be mounted vetically even though the instr5uctions say you can't. I belive that is more oif a cut-off-your-hand manufacutrre cover-their-butt liability than having anything to do with the bearing of the motor not getting lubriacnat.
I personnaly just mounted so-called "horizontal" whole houise fan vertically in my attic windo and it works great. It sucks out 45oo cfm and has not stopped runinning since july.

PLEASE just remind her when it's done, that she has to allow air IN for all the air going OUT.
That's an oil tech's nightmare (or one of them anyway).0
