ASME rating for ALL condensing boilers?
I heard this afternoon that as of 1 January 2006, all condensing boilers will have to be ASME rated.
Has anyone else heard this? Am I just behind the 8-ball down here?
Thanks.

I can't speak for ASME,
although I'm a member and have seen nothing in the 'ASME Journal' on the subject, it's really the states that probably want it, it's a CYA thingy.
Most states including mine (MA) are giving provisional approvals pending what ASME wants to do on this across the board. However, keep in mind that there are stainless heat exchangers out there that have already passed ASME and so I think it's going to happen, JMEO!
At this point it will continue to be a state-by-state, product-by-product thing, so fact or fantasy, I don't know, where are you? Where is ASME, where am I? LOL
BTW, although it will be a PITA for many I think it will continue to provide some level of safety and keep the boiler OEM's on a level playing field of some sorts, JMO!0 -
Mass
boilers must have ASME in Mass as far as I know that means there is only one wall hung condensor that can be sold here

I'm a bit
South of y'all in Georgia.
Interesting point is that I heard this from a gent that works for the people that make the 'Knight' boiler, the new condensing one.

Normally I'd agree with
that as a blanket statement Joel, but I'm finding out that's not the case with the condensers.
There's just too many to list here, but if you have a question on one being okay, look it up here: http://license.reg.state.ma.us/pubLic/pb_pre_form.asp
You may get surprised either way, FACT! Try plugging in some of the usual suspects, you may find that a lot of tradesmen are being hoodwinked???

Then too...
There are codes - and then there are c o d e s.
Some are municipal. Take NYC for example.
Then there are state. Take MA for example.
Then there are insurers. Take FM and IRI for example
Then there are lawyers. Take Bozo The Clown for example
Then there are judges and juries. Take reason, logic and the Constitution and throw it out the window...

I was told by someone I respect...
that Factory Mutual and Insurers Risk gas trains are no longer a production requirement. Just lowly ol' CSD1

ASME Requirement
Jeff,
I believe you are refering to this statement from Lochinvar. We published it in some preliminary training data on our new KNIGHT boiler. It does not only pertain to condensing boilers, but ALL boilers built to the ANSI standards.
It goes something like this...
" The ANSI Z21.13 commitee submitted a change to the standard to clarify the requirements for "Boiler Construction". Section 1.23.1 now reads "Boilers submitted for examination under this standard shall be ASME H- stamped in accordance with the ANSI/ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IV ("Heating Boilers") or CSA B51, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and, Pressure Piping Code, as applicable." This change has just recently been incorporated in an addendum to the standard and approved by ANSI. The latest version containing this new wording is ANSI Z21.13a-2005/CSA 4.9a-2005."
The effective date at which time ALL products listed must comply is in the beginning of 2006; meaning after that date all products listed to Z21.13 MUST carry an "H" stamp.
Basically some manufacturers used a loop hole in the standards wording to supply bolers without ASME. The loop hole is closed.
I hope that helps clear the issue up.

Correct
It's not just condensing boilers. As you say, the requirement is already in the boiler certification standard. They are revising that section to clarify that the H-stamp will be a requirement, not change it.
According to CSA International, the ANSI Z21.13a-2005 revision has an effective date of August 1, 2006.
Enjoy!
Joannie
