A \"unique\" valve

the packing nut was leaking. Not a big deal to fix.

How much repiping are you going to do? If you leave the Unique valves in place, you must keep the velocity low so the water won't short-circuit thru the rads.

    page 40 of \"how come \"

Found this valve on a job the other day...... We are replacing the boiler and repiping the old radiators....This is one of two valves in the house that we will remove.... I would like to keep the valve on the system but want to update the system..... and this looks like it could leak or not work.....I can not wait to see inside the valve. This one was not working and I want to know if it was turned off or broken.....cool stuff:)

it's going to be a sunnyday..

the bottom of the valves have so bad spots too. I am hoping to repipe to the rads. the system has circs now that are probily move the water too fast anyway........and the new system will have circs too. I will try to keep them the circs small...The pex tubing makes it too easy...thanks

If you need to replace the Uniques

you can remove the plug at the top of the rad, pipe the supply in there and the return at the bottom where the Unique was.

That's definitely an old gravity system. If the piping is in good shape I'd just add TRVs to cooler rooms like bedrooms, and retire the old Crane. What boiler are you planning to use?

    I have been

Changing the systems over to a reverse return ...... home run most of the rads to manifolds with pex. I like to add TRV's but sometimes we just run the second floor as a slave zone. We install buderus boilers with the 2107 and the s-120 indirect in most homes. we try to fix the problems when we install new systems. I E.....air problems, large piping, leaks, Incorrect sizing, and anything that just is not right. we hope we save a call back by doing and selling this way. this is one job we just finished, the next job should look just like it......

    Nice work

I'd say that job ranks with the best we regularly see on the Wall. Keep it up.

Personally, I like to retain the possibility of gravity circulation in case electricity becomes unreliable in the future. That's what I did in my house. But I can see where people get tired of bumping their heads on the pipes.....
