Lost our hamster today

I know you get just as attached to a small pet as you do to a cat or dog. Hamsters are notorious escape artists. I used to have a hamster named Sammy, and one night, he escaped his cage. I couldn't find him for two days, and I thought he was gone for good. Finally found him under a sofa with a pull-out bed.
More recently, I had a beloved guinea pig, Cookie, who got sick and died. Cookie had a unique personality and was different from most guinea pigs. It would be hard to find another one like her.
Hopefully, you will find another pet that you love equally.

No big deal, right?
Wrong.
We lost our pet hamster today -- Midnight -- when she got out of her cage and jumped off the table, landing on a concrete floor. Apparently the fall broke her tiny body and she began bleeding internally. We found her barely alive in a pool of blood behind the refrigerator in our laundry room. She lived long enough to take her last breath (and spasm) in our daughter, McKenna's hands. McKenna went nuts, sobbing and blaming herself for not securing the cage door. Midnight was McKenna's pet and I told her that the tiny animal waited until she was with her to say goodbye.
For those who are close to their pets, even a hamster, you know of the trauma. It is a sad day in the Hall house. We'll never replace that cute black Teddy Bear hamster -- just keep her in our thoughts.0 -

Hi John,
Your daughter is not alone, 2 years ago I had to put my German Shepard to sleep , she had cancer and a 43 year old man sat in the vets office and cried like a baby. It not easy they become one of the family.

Yes, it is a big deal. My condolences, John, and to your daughter.
It doesn't matter what/who the animal is, or how long he/she has been part of the family; the attachment is deep, as it should be, I feel. We cried for days last year when we had one of our kitties put down w/ inoperable cancer. We were able to spend the last half-hour w/ him at the vet's, and he seemed to accept what was happening, and we said our goodbyes.
It hurts like **** sometimes, but I don't think I'd want it any other way. Pet Praying Mantids as well, I felt it strongly at the loss...

Sorry for your loss,
Any pet becomes a member of the family and their loss is always hard.

Nature works in mysterious ways...
After reading your post I just happened to go in the yard and found we have a new pet. Seems it got warm enough for this guy to take a swim. After circling for a few minutes, he climbed out and has yet to come back.
To get a sense of scale, the pavers and pool "tiles" are ~4" wide.
