Hi:
We have a 2350 sq ft house in Santa Fe,NM. It currently has Entran II hydronic radiant heat that will eventually fail. (see lawsuit against Goodyear). My living area and kitchen is brick set on slab (no more so it can come up.) Would electric radian be a good way to heat the house when the E2 fails? Most plumbers here are tearing up the walls and installing radiators using the existing boiler, but with nat gas so $$$$, I thought elec and solar panels is a better way to spend Goodyear's $$. Thoughts??

Still
all things considered, gas should be the least expensive way to heat and create DHW. Electric rates will climb with the other fuel prices, I feel.
You should be able to pull up to $75/ square foot from that Goodyear settlement for slab application radiant redos. That should be plenty to replace the slab, and maybe upgrade to a condensing boiler and indirect.
Rumor is there is 250 million setting in a bank for E2 claims. If in five years it is not claimed it goes back to Good Year. Any E2 owners ought to cash in on these funds!!
So far only about 1000 of the estimated 10,000 E2 owners have filed claims.

Dont forget with solar panels there is no energy bill.0 -
How many
batteries will you need to heat your home at night with electric radiant? How many panels to charge those batteries each day? Storage is a real problem.
You can't go wrong with a condensing boiler and "oversized" radiators with TRV's. You can always add some solar hot water for domestic hot water and/or space heating.

Hello fellow New Mexican
I work for a Plumbing Heating contractor in Albuquerque, I wish I could say this were an isolated incident, it's not there's 1000's of feet of this and other brands of tubing like this in our state, like hr said Entran's (Goodyear) class action suit has made restitution and allow's til 2009 for claim's to be made. Running knew radiant line's will be far more palatible than elect., or forced air cosidering the settlement's that are being granted. (as it should be) I would be glad to talk to you if you have any question's regarding this. A little side note Steve, another brand of tubing that is failing at an alarming rate in our Great state is Radiant Roll made by Bio Energy ,( which has been bought out) unfortunately there are no class action suit's against this product that I know of and homeowners are having to deal with this debacle on their own it's a travesty. E-mail me if you have any question's0
