I have in the past gone through dozens of mag lites and there bulbs stink .More then 2 years ago a was given a LED simalar to a mini mag but with lithum battries and led lights and i have never looked back i have on purpose drop it off ladders and other abusive displayes and it contiunes to work ,the lithum battires are a bit more money but they last a while i have also seen richie line products make a simalr type of flash light but with a uv bulb for use with there refregerant dries which works excellent blows away dyetell leak junk.These flash lights are not cheap about 45 to 50 bucks but mine is still working excellent after over 2 years mamafactured by emissive engery comes in 2 stlyes single bulb and a 5 bulb they are completly water proff and marine apprioved with visuablity up to 3 miles and crush resistant to 2000 lbs i have both and they rule i will never buy a mag light again just wish i could get some money back for all the broken ones i have thrown out peace and good luck clammy

Ah The flash light....

I have spent more money on these things than, I believe anyone!!!;-) I find the Mag Light to be for the most part reliable due to its overall performance. I have tried the sale Items at Home depot, lows and other stores, but still the life of these lights come up short. I have even tried the 1 and 2 million spot lights because of the hi intensity beam, but they only last a short time before I noticed the same problem as other lights,...They die.

I'll have to try that light. I didn't say I was happy with Mag light, only that it seems to last the longest for me. I have been looking into the lights that Law Enforcement uses, but VERY expensive. I guess one of us should invent a light that is HVAC proof and will not fail. THEN you could be a very rich man. ;-)

The best one

I have found is this Sho Me. It's the style the firemen around here use.

It has a small rechargable gel cell battery, like a small motorcycle battery. It will shine about 2 hours straight. I get about 3 years out of a battery.

It also uses a sealed beam headlight bulb, either spot or flood version.

They ship with either a 12V truck charger or a 120V plug in style. I have 4 of these lights scattered around the truck shop, and house.

I had got mine at a refregeration supply house and yes it is the same type law enforcement uses it will show blood stains also .In all the time i have had it it seems to be the only one i have not lost at 50 bucks i don't think i will .I will say that i know unless i lose it it will be the last light i buy and own i am very rough on stuff like wifes ,tools ,people and last but not least flash lights .PS you could crack some bodies skull pretty good with it and it will still work well worth the investment clammy

I have used the Makita re-chargeables with great success, both the 7.5 & 9v work well. my current one is 5+ yrs & working great with little maint. Just got a Dewalt, came with a multi-tool kit - no experience with it yet.

check out the inova x5 sold at target.
online about $30, sometimes on sale at target.
pocket sized, short cigar, 5 bright lifetime leds. unbreakable, you can drive over it or throw it against a wall. The cop lites are either streamlight or surefire, but they are really too bright. I own three x5. I don't leave home without one. avoid the x0 or x1 models, their beams are too narrow. There is one in my wife's car - the 123 batteries are lithium - they have a ten year shelf life.

P.S. Best Deal, you can get the 123 batteries in bulk $21/doz from surefire.com. Unbeatable price.

Also, after a blackout, I realized i needed a light i could put down to free up both hands around the house. went to a sporting goods store and ended up buying a "headlight". Small leds on a strap on your forehead. hands free and claims to last 15 hours on 3 AAA batteries. Works great for me and I have used it much more then i would have expected. Want to read in bed and not disturb the honey? no problem. need to crawl under the dash to look for the burnt fuse, there you go. there are many brands an they are pretty cheap. Indispensible if we have another blackout.

I am with Clammy on the LED's

for reasons of sheer durability. The light is a little wimpy and hard to get "focus" though.

My personal favorites are Petzl and a Princeton head lamps used by hikers, bikers and for me, kayakers. Very handy when down in a crawlspace. Bright light up close and aimed where you look. Lightweight and hands-free.

I had it in my toolbag on the commuter train when the lights went out; guess who continued reading his newspaper?

I have taken to wrapping an old shirt around a stick and soaking it in kerosene. Hard to forget where you set one of those down.

The giveaway light to forget everywhere

We once had small flashlights printed with our company name to give away like you would a ball point pen. They were nice and a big success as far as people using them.

This makes me think we should do this again, the new led lights are so neat.

Of course, if I can read the paper over Brad's shoulder, why then should I need to be prepared? Heck, I don't even need to buy my own copy. OK, you can turn the page to the funnies now!

We do a lot of repair work in crawlspaces in schools and churches. By far the best light we ever used is the rather large Streamligt rechargeable. The downsides; very heavy, bulky, big. The upsides; lasts an honest eight hours without a charge, as bright as many 12V plug in spotlights, practically waterproof (been sprayed with hot boiler water many times) and difficult to forget at the jobsite. Around here the local fire departments also use them. We paid about $110 six years ago and the light is still going strong. Another note, takes about one hour to recharge for every hour of discharge time.

Also have switched from the Maglights (bulbs fail every few months) to Pelican brand. More reliable, but far from perfect. Bright but goes through batteries rather quickly.

Allthough I have yet to got he way of the torch.

I have LOST more Freakin flashlights than anything else.

I buy the 9.99 ones at the local Hardware Store. I get a new one every other month. Its new, the light is bright and I keep the local economy going.

I do like the idea of having our name on them though. Could be good advertising. writting my name on it with magic marker does nothing, just like putting it on a ladder. I mean how many times have you seen a job with some one else ladder being used and not thier name on it ?

I went to a job a year later and needed a ladder. The forman of the factory brought out MY LADDER. " Oh Yea, we were going to call you ".

If I am going to loose em ... why pay alot for em.

I had bought, lost, or broken almost every flashlight out there. I bought the survivor model from streamlight, and a year and a half later I have no complaints. I mounted the auto charger cradle upside down on the ceiling of my van cab right above the rear view mirror. It is as bright as my old 4 d cell mag lights, and I find the belt clip useful. It always goes right back in the cradle at the end of a service call.

If I had a fleet I would not hesitate buying one for each truck, as long as the techs are responsible for replacing "lost" flashlights.

I like the rechargable flashlites that come with the drill kits. I buy two kits which gives me 4 batteries. I rotate charge them. They are very bright,the heads rotate to aim and the charge lasts a long time.
