Thanks for the info.
Do you have experience with these? Are they a-lot of work to keep running and to deal with ash disposal? Is it like an hour per day or an hour per week to keep one of these things in good working order?

Coal Stoker and Gas on 1 pipe steam
I currently have 1 pipe steam installed with a Gas boiler.
Can a coal stoker boiler be added as primary heat with the Gas boiler as a backup? It sounds this is complicated because if the return lines are connected together, the boiler water will be the same level in both, and what if they are not the same height etc.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on such an arrangement, or coal stoker boilers in general?

It can be done
You'd have to be able to valve off each boiler from the system, at both supply and return. Each would also require its own feeder, low-water cutoff, pressuretrol etc.
