Before you buy a piece of equipment from a distributor, ask to see their parts inventory for that product line. I've done that on a couple occasions when salesmen have been hyping a new product. The looks and the responses I got were priceless. In nearly all the cases, the salesman was finally forced to admit the truth. That being, they didn't want to spend any money on parts until they "had a few out in the field". That pretty much told me what I needed to know.

Stop selling me
Products that you are not willing to stock repair parts for. Example on May 22 I installed a power vent water heater (State) on Friday it failed, called tech services. From the code its a HSI or a gas valve, does the supplier have either one in stock NO!. Do you think this supplier cares about our customer. So here I am the guy least in control having to go buy an electric water heater and install it for free til the parts come in. Why because they are my customer. Suppliers do the guys in the field a favor if your not willing to carry the parts for the products you sell then just close your doors and go out of business. Thank you J.Lockard0 -
This is one of my favorite gripes. After 33 years of this are your suppliers better or worse as far as service and stocking parts?
It seems that there is nothing in stock anymore. You used to make a list for a job and after reviewing it you could usually tell what parts the supplier would have in stock and what would have to be ordered. Used to be able to pick up 80-90% of most jobs on the spot.
Now everything is out of stock and back ordered

Jim, *~/:)

recently
I went to my formerly favorite supply house to pick up some FA equipment. The equipment was there, but when I was looking for a few other things, one of the other counter jockey's kept shaking his head, "Nope, we don't have that, that one either..." And it kept going.
Amazingly enough, they had everything on the list. I DID get the last of a couple of items.0 -
I have three supply houses
less than a mile from my house, with two stock lists going to two of the supply houses I often have missing items.
Then to get what I want I often have to wait a day or up to a week for inter store shipments to get what I need. Fortunately I am usually re stocking a well equipped truck so I am not slowed down.
As things get more complicated we need more stock just think of all the different types of pex, pro press ignition systems. Use to be some basic copper fittings and a couple of universal controls and gas valves and you were all set.

You go back to help them find parts, and the shelves are stocked with empty boxes full of dust where the parts used to be. Every time a counter guy gets good at his job; he gets promoted to sales or management and a new rookie starts all over again. Very frustrating and time consuming.0 -
Universal products minimize this hassle.
Honeywell is trying to make your lives easier with more universal replacement controls! The S8610U replaces most intermittent pilot gas spark modules out there, the S8910 does the same for large-element HSI's, the R7184U can replace just about any Honeywell or competitive oil primary, with or without an oil valve, pre/post purge or not. Oil Aquastat problems can be solved with the L7224U. Hydronic relays? The R8845U replaces over 30 different Honeywell and other relays, and for t'stats, VisionPro programmables and FocusPro non programmables will work with anything out there: gas,oil,750MV, steam, hydronic, forced air, electric and heat pumps of various configurations. Make your life easier with universal controls. Tech sheets at www.customer.honeywell.com, tech support at 1 800 468 1502.0 -
Thanks Bill W.
Just thanks. Good to see your name once in a while. Chris0 -
Thanks, Chris!
I saw you with Mark, Darin, Scott & Brad in Scott's story about Mark's address to the PHCC. I try to get back here as much as I can, but being on the road eats up my time. I'll be at Alan Mercurio's Oilstock next week, and I was looking for you at NAOHSM in Hartford, but if you were there, I missed you. Take care, and say Hi to all from me.0 -
Well mitch
Thats what I **** about all the time no parts on the shelves. It good that the plumbing, heating and electrical suppliers are not in the grocery store business because they do not have enough product to make dinner.best wiahes j.lockard0
