Dodge sprinters

I WAS a ford customer until it nickel dimed me to death. I have a 2002 F-350 crew dually that until recently it gave me no- problems. 28,000 mile and my front ball joints were junk. No heavy towing, no offroad use, bought truck before boat deal fell through. Replaced 3 injectors and two rocker arms.

Bought 2006 Sprinter 22-21 Mpg fully loaded. Saving over $40.00 per a fill-up. At 36,000 miles per a year I am saving over $4,000.00 for fuel and Maintance. That's enough to buy a new Sprinter and just let it sit there just in case the other breaks down.

My friend buy only GMC/Chevy has simular problems as ford, just bought his first sprinter and laughs at the pump. Niether one of us have spent over $80.00 to fill truck up, compaired to over $100.00.

    Talked with my transmission company

He had a Sprinter in for a rebuild(he didn't say why it needed rebuilding).

He quoted a price of nearly $3,000.00 to rebuild it, as I recall.

    Transmission problems

    NOT!

A local guy in these parts that does package and light freight expiditing just had to replace the tranny in his. It has 460,000 miles on it. The motor is all original and the only part that has had to be replaced (3x) is the EGR valve. He told me that the majority of his driving is freeway going between 75-77 MPH. He says he gets a good solid 19MPG at those speeds.

    3k

So, our Ford Tranny cost about 3k and smoked at only 95k miles . we have two Sprinters get 18-21 typically 19-20. Ours have had a few Gremlins but are some of the first brought here they are from 02. since updates where added by the dealer we have been trouble free.

I'll have to take a pic of my new truck it's an '05 sprinter with a spartan box body on it. The body is 12' long with outside doors. After 3k the turbo blew up on it but it was repaired at no cost. Other than that no problems... I am not a big fan of the body we chose though, it's too tall and narrow (10') The shelves in the back are probably only about 1 foot wide, items tend to fall off easily. Also, the wipers only have three options, too slow, too fast, or way too fast, the cab is VERY crammed. I was used to a 1 ton chevy cube truck with a much larger cab/ box body so maybe I'm jsut spoiled.

Wow, Wish i had tat luck with mine, I bought one Sept 1 2005 is has been back 9 times for power loss and no turbo. I have had it back about 3 months now and hope all is well. I thought the problem was the dealer but they brought they Chrysler regional service rep and still had issues. I would have to think long before buying another one. fuel mileage (when running) is 19- 20 mpg

    too small

I had been looking at them, and I got a chance to see one up close that was owned by a HVAC Co that was doing duct work on a job I was working Plumbing and Hydronics. His complaints were that the darn thing was too narrow, and you had to keep your eyes peeled on the "tip meter" to make sure you don't roll over driving around a construction site. And the Cab is pretty small.

Maybe they will make a bigger version for us 250 plus pounders?

I still would love that MPG these days.....

    Gotta remember Cosmo

These things were designed, engineered and built in Germany where the old city streets are many times about the size of a bike path here. That's also the reason they turn on a dime. I too, would like to see more room in the cab. Being 6'3", it's a little tight and my 6'8" son finds the thing highly uncomfortable after an hours ride. I have to mention the sheer, unmitigated joy of filling up with fuel after driving 550 miles on a tank. What a bonus with fuel at $3.00 per gl!!

One thing I do NOT like is the traction/anti spin control. Makes it difficult to go anywhere in the snow. Blizzak style tires from Cooper made a marked improvement over the Michelin doughnuts that the van came with.

Yea I remember seeing them in Greece

It's funny, Mercedes has sold millions of these vans all over europe. I have seen these vans all over in every European country I have been to. Yet here, they are afraid to put the Mercedes logo on them for fear that they will be seen as being too "posh", and would be thought of as too elitist.

The Mercedes brand over there is not seen as just a luxury. I have seen more Mercedes trucks, military "jeep"s than cars over in Europe. My favorite cars are the 50, and 60's era Mercedes diesel sedans that are still in business (as taxi's)[edit] on the Greek Island my parents came from. Mercedes has some really cool dump trucks that have four front steering wheels, and can turn on a dime to navigate the tight corners.

Yea, I really want one......but gee whiz, I need more room!
Does that make me too American?

The 2007 models are different, more choices for engines, wheelbases, roof heights, options. The Freightliner, Dodge Sprinters roll off the same assemble line in Dusseldorf as the other MB Sprinters. I understand that MB-USA did not want to downgrade their posh image and did not want mere tradesmen in their dealerships.

    Same vehicle

The only difference is the Dodge vs Mercedes badge.

    Dealerships

I seriously doubt that we would have ever seen the vans at a Mercedes automobile dealership!!!

We would have seen them in the Freightliner, or Dodge dealerships, as we do now. If you have any family over in Europe you can get the Mercedes logos, and the hood ornament to install on your Dodge/Freightliner van!

    Now that

I would like to do. I don't mind a bit if my customers know that my work vehicle is a Mercedes. Can I help it if they make the most efficient thing in its class?

    Get me a set!

My GMC Savana with the Deisel is averaging 19.5 mpg!!! Big enough for me and what I carry as well. A lot less out of pocket than the Sprinter.

    guys

The sprinter is NOT smaller than an american van it is BIGGER . It looks smaller because it is taller . the seats will go back much further if you order them without the factory cab devider and get an aftermarket one instead.

Maybe it was a high price from the local Freightliner dealer who had to go out of state to price the sprinter for me. I can buy another GMC today for the sameish price.

    Gents

I have been visiting and contributing to ths site for years. Finally, a thread I can add info to :o). I work for MBUSA within the Engineering Services division.

The MB version of the sprinter just doesnt fit into the US MB product portfolio. Not even close. It is a utility vehicle. That is not how the MB brand management in the US is defined. Don't know how it got to that, but it would be a square peg in a round hole. More importantly, the MB dealer network is not equipped to support / service vehicles of that size and weight.

As some have mentioned, DaimlerChrysler makes ALL KINDS of vehicles. The MB models available in the US are only a portion of what's available globally. The truck portfolio is extensive, and profitable. (MB, Frieghtliner, Sterling, etc) Ranging from light, medium to heavy truck classes (5-8). And yes, the MB brand management outside of the US is more broad based. Globally, we have countless variants of any given model. Its enough to make you ga-ga.

Also, you may be interested to know from a fuel usage point of view, the Sprinter is now available as a hybrid. (diesel/electric) Neat stuff. But I dont think its available in the dodge variants in the US.

    MB grille -

is availabe from an outlet in Phoenix - hub caps too! I had mine since Nov 05. Loss of power, (turbo sensor twice, dealership over filled the oil case), engine light warning light kept coming on (temp sensor), and now at 43 000 km - at moderate/heavy throttle - loss of power again when unit shifts from 3 to 4. Behaves itself if I drive like I have eggshells undr my right foot (no fun in that is there!)Now waiting for the dealership to get trans testing module - if I drive at posted speeds - then 27 - 29 mpg cdn. If I drive more agressively then 25. Am I happy - absolutely - dealership has been the BIG disappointment though. MB grille and insignia is a real eye catcher! And the money it has saved on fuel costs alone has been worth the price of the payments.
