In New Hampshire (supposed to change soon for gas) the only thing you need is a permit from the fire department. They do not require any licensing or schooling for oil or gas. As far as wiring, I have alway's done my own wiring for the system.

    NE licenses

If I have it right, in MA, to install a new boiler, burner, and tank, you need plumbing permit and fire dept. permit (for burner). To pull these permits you need to be at least journeyman plumber with burner tech cert. Feel free to correct where I'm wrong.

What licenses and permits, and from where, are needed for same work in NH and CT?

In CT you need a contractors licence, Like an S-1, S-3, B-1 or B-3. Depends on what you're doing. I think any of these would cover the work you mentioned in a residence. Don't need a plumbing permit, just an HVAC permit. And no fire permit.

    In Massachusetts

don't forget an electrical permit and wiring by an electrician. Most people think incorrectly that a burner teck can wire anything in oil after the stair switch that is incorrect. All wiring installs gas or oil must be wired by a licensed electrician.

Although I often find myself sitting on a bucket telling them what I want wired to where.

  • oil burner wiring

Dear Mitch; according to 527CMR 4.00 A person holding a certificate of competency as an oil burner technician may connect or disconnect for the purpose of installation, alteration, repair or replacement, any device, wiring or control required by 527CMR 4.00 to be part of an oil burner installation, or being an intergral part of the oil burning equipment, at the connection on such device, wiring control or part to be replaced, from the thermal disconnect to the oil burning appliance.

    Dear Monty

    I have CMR 4.00 third Edition page 109 of Q & A second question.

Q can a certified oil burner Technician wire a New oil burner.

A No only a licensed electrician can wire a new installation. However, wiring of replacement equipment may be done by certified technician within the guidelines of 527 CMR 12.00 and the Advisory Ruling of the Board of Electricians dated December 3 1993.

We can change a burner, circulator or controls but not the whole enchilada at once.

Been told this by several inspectors.

You are correct that in massachusetts a NEW installation is required to be wired by an electrician . However a REPLACEMENT boiler can be wired by the oil tech from the firematic onwards

    Sorry to

be a stick on this but go to page 19 & 20 of 527 CMR 4.00. I am not going to type this whole thing in but. Certificate of competency allows you to repair or replace any "device" or "control" of an instalation or being an integral part of oil burning equipment.

Again we can repair and replace but cannot run new wires.

I also got that notification when I received my licence renewal stating that.
