at Siggys e-store www.hydronicpros.com

I have the Systems with Radiant Panels book and it goes through a step by step design and load calc. It does refer to Caleffi Handbooks 99 software. Although in metric the book was nicely translated to English.

I'll bet Siggy has or could get a copy of the software for you. The books may have all the info you need.

    ...to European heat loss calculation software?

    Does such even consider "stick built" as a form of construction?

    I'd like to find design and construction techniques/materials used to achieve the btu/sq ft numbers they are shooting for. I don't think stick built will cut it unless you use 2x12's for your walls. I have a feeling that infiltration is held to only that which is provided mechanically.

    Energieeinsparverodung or EnEv

    Google, EnEv germany and poke around. The article steve posted the other day by Viessmann got me to looking around and I found this EnEv.

    Believe the Canadians were constructing house with double walled 2 x 4. The walls separated by 10 -12 inches and insulated.

    UK Building Regulations

    Software, no (or maybe, see below).

    UK Building Regulations are available online here;

    http://www.odpm.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1130478

    These are government documents defining minimum standards for new or refurbished buildings.

    I think you'd want Part L; Conservation of Fuel and Power for Dwellings, available here;

    http://www.odpm.gov.uk/pub/337/ApprovedDocumentL1AConservationoffuelandpowerNewdwellings2006edition_id1164337.pdf

    I think the Limiting U values (i.e., R values in metric units?) in Table 2 page 21 is most relevant. How the designer keeps the heat loss through a window, wall roof, floor, etc., below the maximum values is left up to them.

    If you understand any of it, you're a better man than I am. ;-)

    You can download a building simulation software program for use with Part L of the Building Regulations here;

    http://www.ncm.bre.co.uk/news.jsp?id=76

    You click on the 'Download' link at the top of the page. It will be in metric units & you need Microsoft Access. I don't have Access, I haven't tried the program & don't know anything about it.

    I found some software in Germany...

    ... but I have yet to find the time to try it out. In Germany, the reference EU DIN # is 12831. Here is a link to one program by SSS2000. This one seems to have quite a few options and looks structure-wise similar to Hvac-calc, but is very pricey at E3000.

    MH-Tools seems to offer some freeware tools that you can download once you register at their site. They're also German-centric, sorry!

    Thanks Constantin. I'll check them out, but I won't be buying one that costs €3,000!!!

    Stick frame

    Once upon a time i had been to germany a few times for a few years and when asked about american building techinques and wood framing they all frowned at me and stated that wood frame house are cheap and unsafe and that they would not live in one if it was given to them .I just sat there drinking my beer and snapps and smiled what else could i do they where right there german .If you go to other countries you see alot more mansanry homes and building i believe there are much less over all promblems with there methods of construction like you are going to see termites and or carpentar ants with mansonary homes and buildings i doubt it and it seems that there are alot less BS with there construction methods plus mansonary homes are tough and quite when your in them .Peace and good luck clammy
