swamp cooler

Reminds me of the Flintstones when they had a pelican or similar large bird sitting on a large block of ice flapping its wings to prod=vide air conditioning.

I'm still wondering where they got the ice from.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

    Swamp coolers....

Swamp coolers operate on the concept of evaporative cooling and are very popular in warm, dry climates.

Air from the occupied space is circulated over a wetted surface or pad. The air from the occupied space causes some of the water to vaporize. This vaporizing water absorbs heat from the air passing over the wetted surface, resulting in a cooling effect in the space to be cooled.

Quite often, swamp coolers take air from outside the structure, pass it over the wetted pad and then introduce this cooled air to the occupied space.

No need for a compressor, just a pump and a blower!

    swamp

the leaving air will approach the ambient wet bulb temp and the RH% will be 100. The temp of the water in the sump will be the same as leaving air temp. The evap pads are made of shreded wood and tend to filter the air and get nasty smelling hence the name. All the systems I have seen used 100% outside air.

Commercial kitchens are another good and common application.

We installed one a few years ago for a kitchen in a private golf club. THere was one in place but it hadn't worked in years. I asked the club manager how the new unit was working. He said it's not air conditioning, but then again who wants to pay to air condition a kitchen. Way too much heat gain. He said on the really bad days it is more comfortable in the kitchen with the unit on than it would be without.
