On the road with Gil's Wheel

Just back from a full week of training at Watts Radiant in Missouri where I was invited to help with the classes for a group of wholesalers and manufacturer reps.

    Things I learned:

    * Airlines have an issue with carrying the Carlson-Holohan IAoE as a carry-on! That led to some interesting dialog.

    * Always be ready to be surprised. Ran into Wheels (Steve Wieland) in the arrival lobby! What a hoot & a real blast to spend a week together. Not sure Watts will recover too quickly from our in-class banter(G). As one instructor remarked: "We sometimes have classes that are best described as lively. This is the liveliest class we've ever had!" My sides still hurt from laughing so hard. If you ever get the chance to attend a class at Watts, just ask them about pot-pie and wax toilet gaskets.

    * A view through the looking glass to see perspectives from a point of view I've never seen quite so clearly. Wow! I learned a ton from those wholesalers and reps.

    * Virtually everything we discussed in class can be traced to the Godfather of Hydronics - Gil Carlson. The more I'm learning about Gil, the more amazed I am by the sphere of influence he had/has on what it is we do so well in hydronics.

    * Never give Wheels your wife's cell number! He called Lois, left a msg and said he was with the local police dept. "We have a Dave Yates in custody who was apprehended at the airport carrying a suspicious large package about 2' x 2'. We need you to call or come down to headquarters and post bail." She called while we were checking in at the hotel. Wheels answered: "Hello, Springfield police"

Another highlight of the week was having Dan Foley join up and we tag-teamed the class with some of our insights regarding sales and stocking levels contractors need, which led to a very lively give-n-take session.

So now it's official - the Carlson-Holohan IAoE has hit the road and survived. I had an opportunity to showcase Gil's Wheel and talk about the folks whose names grace the glass. I don't know nearly enough - yet - about the fab-four on that glass, but I'm learning. This gun's for hire.

I think my left arm is a few inches longer this week!

    It's all about the

...suffering, burden and embarrassments of hauling around Gils' Wheel. Your journey with the oversized good luck charm will provide countless hours of stories to tell - you'll miss it when it's gone, proud to have it for the term but oh so glad to see another carry it forward.

It's a burden One can only carry it as far as he can. I could take it off your hands;-)
