I wonder where the current ones were born? Most large job engineering comes out of India and most US firms send work to India at night. At the local U there are very few US born students in the Masters or PHD engineering programs. Wonder what the future will look like.

    Number of mechanical engineers in the US

    In 1880, there were 7,000 mechanical engineers in the US.

    By 1920, there were 136,000.

    By 1930, there were 226,000.

    In 1913, the Atlantic Monthly stated that "Machinery is our new art form."

    What's fascinating is that in 2004 there were still 226,000 mechanical engineers registered in the US.

    wonder what the population

    growth has been since 1930? now for the big question, hehe, if the % of engineers has gone down, whats the numbers for lawyers?

    You are right sir...

    There are many engineers...just not in this country anymore. One of the "victims" of the electronic age, because it's so easy to get specs/drawings/etc. done overseas for a much lower rate.

    Sad but true...
