A pex eating Bug?
I was reading the current issue of "PLaymouse - A serious magazine for serious mice" and the article read, "Good Pex, or Should I Eat The Rubber?"
Welcome back from (or is it to) my hell :-)

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?
Please tell me this is a bad joke with no merit.

I do not know about
pex but I was in a class the other day on Plastic PE pipe used on natuaral gas and LP and they showed a catapiller type worm in California which had eaten a hole in the plastic pipe.0 -
I have seen insect
bore holes in some EPDM tube in my area, on a few ocassions!
Maybe it's time for a PAPA pex/aluminum/pex/aluminum tube Seems like an outer metal layer would be the only surefire way to stop this. Or a borate treatment befor covering
Although I have heard rumors that some aggressive termite species will bore through aluminum siding to get to a food source. I saw an article about that in JLC once, years ago.

Eat
When and if any organism feeds on polycarbon plastics we're in REAL trouble!0 -
There are \"Bugs\" that grow in sewage treatment plants,
and "bugs" and crobes that grow inside oil pipelines that Eat Metal!...
i asked a question of The recent munchkin class hosted by Mechanical sales in Anchorage and directed by Chuck Shaw if there were any crobes or spores or bugs that grow in or near the condensate discharge....There are so many people who have seen so much more anomalies that i thought that perhaps there are some sort of bugs or crobes that can live in high ascidic environments...so, i thought while this isnt exactly what you are talking about it is similar...a question that just might have had a 'been seen to belived' type answer.0 -
Weez,
I read about a bacteria some years ago, that the scientists had great hope for, that could "eat" the atomic waste and rend it harmless (kinda like the ones that work on PCB's and that other horrible crap).
I guess they never panned out.

THATS ALL WE NEED
little green glowing radioactive ants running around, LOL
sounds like something out of star wars. Although, I do have to say, some of the stripped bass pulled from the Hudson River, might have had a glow, LOL0 -
When you think about it
plastic piping is much softer than metal piping. Compare sawing PVC to iron and you get the idea. Most aluminum, especially if you want it to be flexible, is rather soft too. That and the fact that one poster included his phone number leads me to think there might be something to it.
We should watch this closely. I just posted on their board asking for any further info that might have come up:

riskssss
I agree..... but I would rather take the risk of mice on pex then have the acidic water (that is in my area) on copper.
Hey, Maybe we can convince the pex people to put anti rat stuff in the EVOH Barrier.....
I can see the next issue of Mouse-a-politan: Which Pex is Preferred by Rats and Mice, A? B? C? D? You be the judge!0 -
Hungry Bugs
So these bugs what are they? Will they not eat aluminum, if not what type of pipe is safe? How are the fittings installed a crimping system.Anyone want to buy a wirsbo air expander?0 -
All the stripes are the same shade of brown!0 -
say it isn't so
I really wish I never read this thread, as if Wheel's bad humor wasn't enough I don't want to hear that all the miles of pex I have out there could become a nightmare for me. This better be one of those myths.....
Ok wheels, I am just kidding... really. I love your humor. You are a very funny looking man...... I mean your a very FUNNY man.
I'm sorry, I just got back from my Master Plumber's Assoc. meeting and lets just say that I am still in wise crack mode, though the tiredness, sleep deprivation, and malted beverage infusions have deteriorated my once powerful zinger skills.
