oversized orifice

Had tech call me with some strange pressures said he had 2.5 ton split with 3 ton coil (condenser is about 10 years old lennox)air handler case coil 3 ton janatrol brand new said house was 77 degress had head pressure of 150 and back pressure was 75 asked about sub cooling super heat said whats that. said he did not change piston to match out unit said to change piston with one from lennox factory .just want to if know piston is oversized ie 2 ton cond .3 ton piston would that make for low head pressure .any time I have installed splits always sized piston to condenser size

    Hello

    Mr Bell..yes you would be correct.When ever you change the
    original equipment to one of higher efficiency there will always be a change in head pressure.

    However, how will you know which piston will suit your needs
    with out going thru a bunch of them,and even then you'll be
    ball parking.

    We always change out the coil along with the condenser if we
    dont go back with the same brand.Even with the same brand one would need to make sure the indoor coil is clean,before you even stand a chance at dailing in the superheat.

    It a win/win for you and the customer to change both out at the same time.The customer see better airflow,has a better
    warranty,and it more efficient.

    And you get to put her or them in your rearview mirror,till next year when it time to do the yearly cleaning.
