Even though you are handy i feel that you should leave that up to the proffessional to those changes where they have done it a number of times. This kind of stuff should not be taken lightly you should have it done soon.

replacing automatic water fill for old boiler
How hard is it to replace the automatic water fill valve/sensor for a steam boiler? Mine gave out a month or two ago. The heating/plumbing guy gave me an estimate of about $400 to replace it, which I bet is mostly labor...I'm VERY handy and patient, so I'd be happy to replace this myself. I know it is only a matter of time before I forget to visually check the water level and I burn up my boiler. I'm hoping to get a couple more years out of this old girl before I replace it. FYI...I don't think it is losing alot of water. I keep the water about half-way in the sight glass. It takes about a month or more before it gets down to 1/4 or so down the sight glass.0 -
Feeder
To tell you the truth $400 is a good price for a feeder or l.w.c.o alone and a give away for both low water cut off(sensor) and feeder as you have mentioned. Have him do it ,he sounds like a friend....It's not worth your time and risk..0
