New hires

The list covers almost everything that he will need. How new is you "New" Tech.? He may not know how to use all of them, but I think you covered the basics...Sometimes you have to tell them to show up with steel toe work boots. If they show with sneakers,.Out you go.

Does anyone have a minumum required tool list they provide a new HVAC service person to bring to the position with them?

    Excellent

I see a few things I missed. After having so many of my own tools for many years, what I consider a necessity, would fill more than 2 pages. Now as a supervisor, I want to be fair to the "newbies", while ensuring they have the basics to perform the position they were hired for.

    hey Mark

No, no bear has et me yet. Just been busier than a scorned hornet. No rest for the wicked as they say. We almost had a winter up here this year, got down to 15 below once. Ah, I miss the good old days, 25 below for 3 weeks, 120 hour weeks, most on overtime. Thinkin of moving to Antarctica. Spring came early this year. 6 days of over 70 in April. Supposed to still be snowing, hmmmm. Enough about the weather.

How you been? Haven't heard much from Murph lately either. Don't see you guy's name on the Wetstock list. Who am I gonna play poker with? When are you guys comin up to go fishin? Wow, used up my question quota for the day already. Better get to work, thar's customers waitin.

    Thanks Bill

Mike .... the new guy is just out of "pre employment" entering first year reefer training. All he really has is a handful of pliers, drivers and "cheeep stuff". He wants some direction on "real tools".

Just had a big confab with employees..

regarding just such a list last week. We shut the doors to the business for three days and turned the phones off. I ordered biscuits and gravy (delivered) in the mornings, and pizza for lunch and we opened up the discussion. It was an "Alaskan Wetstock". Absolutely every aspect of this business was open for discussion, from what types of uniforms to wear, to how the paperwork should be handled, to having the office staff do "ride-alongs" with the techs and having the techs staff the phones. This allows techs and office staff to see what the other deals with during the day to better understand and have more patience with each others job difficulties. To "feel each others pain", so to speak! We had a great three days. Techs have lots of ideas, and some of them are actually worth listening to!! ;-) Out of this "Great Alaskan Confab" came mandatory tech tool lists, mandatory company supplied tool lists, itemized and standarditzed van inventory lists, better ideas on how to make the paperwork flow better, how to track jobs, payments, parts receipts, etc. We are also implementing a company operating policy manual. Get everything written down so every one is on the same page and we quit trying to reinvent the wheel every time we hire someone new. Some of the ideas came from Al Levi's book "Operating Power" , and its companion "Additive". If you haven't read these two manuals yet, I HIGHLY suggest it. I always felt like there was a more organized way to run my business but I just didn't quite know how to do it. These two manuals are a great help in getting you pointed in the right direction.
If you are interested let me know and I can attach the lists for standardized van stock, tech tools, company tools, and van supplies. I think they are pretty comprehensive for a heating only contractor like us.
Warm regards from (not so) chilly Fairbanks,
    Rocky

    Great ides Rocky

We had a similar confab a couple of weeks ago (not 3 days though). We are now trying to train a new manager (the right way)!!! I am definitely interested in your information. My mail is tsp77@shaw.ca. Thanks in advance

    Boiler Guy...

Will have office manager (Mom) ;-) scan the lists and attach them to an e-mail which we will fire off tomorrow. I quite frankly know WAY more about Riello burners and Tekmar controls than I do about my scanner and all the black magic involved in getting that info transferred from scanner to e-mail. "Play to your strengths" I always say! :-0 Will send along those lists tomorrow. And get and read Al Levi's books I mentioned. They are really super!
    Regards,
    Rocky

    Al Levi's book

You could find it in books and more right here on the wall. When I got it , I could not put it down.

This link should get you there.
