White absorbs less radiant heat. So maybe it has to do with reflecting its own radiant heat back. The black skin absorbs this radiant energy more readily. The hollow hair shafts allow radiant from exterior in. But a then there is the 24 hours of darkness season no.

Here's the proof
I took this down after 4 years, and wrote in the dust with my finger to illustrate the amount of dust collected in such a short time. I had installed it myself under suspended tube, with the correct air gap, in my own home, and it was under BRAND NEW subfloor. No cracks in floor for dust to get in. As far as I can tell, it had to be from convective air currents dragging dusty air into the joist bay. It made a believer out of me. I understand and believe how foil products reflect radiant energy, but I don't want to count on them doing it for long. I'm more and more sold on the extruded plates. Kevin0 -
Did you know
that a Polar Bear has black skin? White fur but black skin.
Their skin absorbs radiant heat according to the biologists interviewed on the Discovery Channel.
Now how can this be if they have white fur and it covers the black skin?

Actually polar bear fur
has no color; the tubes are essentially clear to translucent, rather waxy. It is the refraction of light through them that makes them appear white (and as pointed out by J.E., everything around it is also white.
(Wonder why Stadler (now Viega) used a polar bear in it's ads years ago. Appropos of nothing....)

Actually polar bear fur is green
Their fur is actually green in the summer. Algae collects in their hollow hair tubes and gives a strong green tinge.0 -
Imagine this:
You are shining a spotlight into a mirror and the light is reflecting back into your eyes. Would it be less blinding if covered with this much dust or more? Visible Light is just a different frequency of radiant heat energy no?
As far as Polar Bears and Discovery Channel: I didn't see the program, and don't have the answer about his skin or where he poops, but I'll just say that those are the same guys who will say that you, me, the polar bear, and EVERYTHING came from a rock 4 point 6 billion years ago.
They teach evilution and deny that God created us. There is no evidence, they believe it by faith. That means it's a religion. They call it science, use lies to promote this secular religion, and then use our taxpayer dollars to support it. "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools." You can learn some interesting stuff there, but don't don't forget to think critically.

got it...but...
I will post a link to an ASHEREA study I just read (Once I find it, it was e-mailed to me) that shows that even dusty radiant barrier is 75% beter than NO radiant barrier. Not insulation, radiant barrier.
I'm not a fan of double bubble. Their R-value is one step better than useless. (R-4) I have found a foam product that has a downward R-value of 14.4. Just fine for radiant by iteslf.
I still believe that you need BOTH reflective value AND thermal transfer resistance (R-value) for radiant heat. Also, I also happen to believe that one is not much good without the other. I am a big Believer in Heat Transfer plates!
I'm wide open to new information. I think we will see more studies, more claims and more people trying to get our business. All this is great for Radiant and wetheads everywhere.
I also happen to think that fiberglass in in trouble. and I don't think they are going to roll over without a fight.
As hydronics continues it's growth on the US it will be a very interesting thing to be a part of.
