Vacation Destination??

Respectfully submit that there is no such thing as "off the beaten path" in coastal New England, but this comes pretty close:

You'd have to be into the quasi-remoteness and limited options for sightseeing, etc., but if you really want to tune out, this might be an option. Never been there, but a good friend spends a long weekend there every year. Loves it.

    Help with vacation destination

Cindy & I plan to get away from Steam,Scorched Air and Oil fired systems in July.

We would like to go to the coast Mass Ct Vermont somewhere to enjoy holding hands eating well and of course dip our toes in the Atlantic while forgetting all heating knowledge for 7 days. ( well try!)

Any suggestions sure would be great.

    Budget?

And, are you planning on staying on one place of spending a roving week? And what is your comfort level?

If there is one place nice to go (but less $ off season) it is the Castle Hill Inn and Resort in Newport, RI. That is the high end, but weekend packages should be checked out. The beach houses are adorable and quite cozy, right on the water.

Cape Cod is practically booked (our family place is anyway and the neighbors say so too). Can't help you there. But you can always ask around, look for last minute cancellations.

Can't beat Maine, ayuh. Mid-Coast near Boothbay Hahbah is the Hodgdon Island B&B.

http://www.bbonline.com/me/hodgdonisland/index.html where I have stayed also. (All I am telling you are places I have personally stayed.) Good sea kayaking nearby.

Near Kennebunkpoht, is the Cape Arundel Inn:

The Atlantic coast of Vermont is a-ways off unless you are reading the Global Warming threads, in which case it should be lapping on the west bank of the Connecticut River by, oh, next Thursday about noon.

    :)

Just a few places you may enjoy.

    Brad's a Jolly joker..The coast ain't going anywhere....

Dipping your toes in the Atlantic can be mighty chilly at any time of the year, in the greater Noetheast.

If I was a betting man, (which I'm not) my preferences would lead me to the southern coast of the Bay State or, if price isn't the decicing factor...maybe the Rhode Island coast and think about Block Island for a day trip. If you're a fisherman, I'd venture further north for some Striper action.

If you are intent on really going north, give me an email. I know some great spots in southern Maine that will fit the bill. Chris

    Block Island?

My favorate is Block Island, if you don't mind spending lots of money. It's off the tip of Long Island, but can be accessed by ferry from Rhode Island.

I stay at the Spring House, an sprawling 1870 beach hotel like you had in Rockaway or Coney Island with a plaster dining room you can fit the Good Year blimp inside. No heat.

Really pretty place. Bring lots of money.

    N.E,

Southern Maine like around Wells will give you sandy beaches. Bar Harbor is beautiul but has more of a rugged, rocky coastline including a National Park . Cape Cod is Sandy and warmer than Maine . Both are great depends upon what kind of scene you prefer. Nantucket island and it's more famous sister Martha's vineyard are also spectacular but typically a little pricier than the coast. Big Stripers hiding around the Vineyard and places like Cuttyhunk if your the fishing type.

    Skip Plymouth Rock....

Speaking as a Mayflower descendant, it is a college prank writ large, a place to step off the boat to pee....
Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower II is enjoyable, however.

    Skip Plymouth Rock....

If it was just a bit flatter on the otherside it would make a great skipping stone.
  • What about a cruise ?

We were thinking about taking one that Leaves from NY and goes up the east coast to Nova Scotia , with a few stops along the way . Last time I checked a 4 or 5 day cruise could be had for under $500 PP for an inside stateroom ( land excursions were extra ) .

    summer vacation

Come to Maine. I'm going to Alaska with NAOHSM in July. You can eat my share of lobsta while I'm gone. Add in a few steamers and a couple of cold ones, and it doesn't get any better than that.

    vacation

Martha's Vineyard is great. Stayed in Edgartown last summer for a long weeked. Parked in Falmouth, took the ferry, and used cabs to get around the island. We went on the budget end and stayed at the Edgartown Lodge, very basic, but right in the middle of town. Great restaurants within walking distance.
