I see that one very reputable installer bailed out away from HD already.

Many of the stores out here on Long Island have it too. Riverhead, Shirley and Patchogue stores when I last looked.

I looked at the price. It wasn't competative with dedicated independant Solar installers.

As Martha would say....
It's a good thing! HD will raise the awareness and the real pros will ultimately benefit as the bottom feeders will stop wasting their time and flock to HD and/or many will have a bad experience, which will also keep the pros busy.
Has to be the way it will go. I see it in everything the DIY-store "professional" installers have been doing in my area. Water heaters with flues spilling CO; kitchen cabinets installed as if in a fun-house; leaking dishwashers; no caulking under self-rimming sinks - killing laminate countert tops; and, you'll get a chuckle here - sending in an "expert" flooring crew who we gave specific instructions to regarding our radiant tube locations & they then punctured the tubing - not once, but several dozen times. The GC's guys knew there was a problem when it began raining down through the newly plastered ceilings!
Like the time I spied radiant electric floor mats in a big-box DIY-store. It was in the ceramic tile aisle - in theory a great location - and it was plugged in with a partial bury under a 12x12 tile. Felt great, so I asked the two salespeople engrossed in their own personal conversation about the product. "Oh, you don't want that stuff. It's a real PITA to work with." I hope they still work there!

Humnnnn
I didn't have the time to read that far into it, but HD and the other big-box outfits rapidly learn how the installers price and their margins while slowly squeezing them by raising the percentage they take off of the gross for their (big-box) net gain. Once they're done, they get rid of the "high priced" pros and take on the race-to-the-bottom gang that cycles in and out of business every three years or so. That's what they're in the process of doing with A/C and heating. In the end, all they'll need is someone with a refrigerant license who's willing to do the work for the price they dictate.
That's what they've done time & again. Windows & doors were first. Then came flooring and carpet. Then plumbing - and I have taken the time to meet with the big-box outfits to learn about the programs & what each install category pays.
