    Research

I've spent a fair amount of time this winter researching these units, and I've backed off for awhile. Virtually every model I've looked at is grossly oversized for an average house heating load, which means that they run a lot of the time at idle, which translates into LOTS of smoke. In some counties of the U.S. they have been banned for this reason.

Most manufacturers sell to local "distributors" who sell to the general public. You have to find your own installer. Installation training? I haven't seen or heard of any.

The cadillac of wood boilers is still H.S. Tarm (www.woodboiler.com), and they still maintain that the best way to utilize wood boilers is to use them in conjunction with an insulated heat storage system. I think this would have real potential for your friend's radiant kennel.

    Check with the AHJ

most of the typical outdoor woodburners will not pass the new EPA standards. Some states already ban new installations.

I'd look into a gasification unit. Typically not designed for outdoor use, you would need to build a shelter to house it.

The only reason for outdoor installation is the insurance company requirements. Check with the customer's carrier, MOST require a UL, possibly an ASME listing. Only a few have both of these. Royall has both listings, but is not a high efficiency unit.

I have sold and installed some gasification units, similar to Tarm, from Poland and the Czech Republic. Both Atmos, and KP Pyro brands.

Within a week or so a new US built, stainless, high efficiency model will be unveiled. It will have UL and soon to follow ASME.

    New EPA standards?

Do you have a link? They previously exempted whole-house wood burning appliances.

    Dave, EPA

has actually regulated emissions fro wood burning stoves since 1988, according to the info at a www woodburning site. Not sure it has been enforced well, however. The standards ar "tiered' in as the years go by.

The EPA is looking hard at outdoor woodburners. The manufactures of these products recently banded together and formed a group to address what they will need to do to meet tier 4, 5, an further requirements. Many states are also looking into wood burners based on neighbor complaints, above and beyond EPA standards.

Lots of good pro and con comments and debate, regarding emissions and upcoming regs, at www.woodheat.org
