    time to replace system

My heating system is 2 zone hotwater ,supplying base boards on 2 floors, total sq ft=2148. So far gas costs from January to date are $1400,includes stove and gas water heater. System is 30 years old, works fine but wonder if I can save with more efficient sysem. Folks have suggested Weil McLain or Buderus...any thoughts would be appreciated, live in Boston area

    Replacement

It's always a good Idea to update your system if you can aford it. Hi eff is the wat to go and also make sure that the companyuses all of the latest piping trends for it can also save you money down the road.

    just a note

your water heater uses half of your yearly gas usage and they run around 75%, so a new buderus running at around 95% or even better with a hot water maker will save you money over the ong run. That type of boiler will run you twice as much as a standard 80%, but fuel prices are only going to go up. That type of boiler has been in use in Germany for twnety years, don't think it has been ok'd in Mass yet. The guys on the wall will prolly confirm that, but I talked to the local buderus rep here in MN about that a couple of weeks ago and it will get ok'd in Mass

Good advice from both posts above. A high quality gas boiler (possibly condensing), indirect DHW and sensible, modern piping techniques would give you a decent payback over the long term. Perhaps start with somebody in your area from the Find A Pro list above. Good luck, and thanks for being proactive. Those boiler replacements in the dead of the winter are tough on all of us.

    HOLY CR*P!

    $1400 for 4 months????

I would look at insulation and the building enveloppe. I did additional insulation, and weather stripping ( can't afford new windows yet!) and my bill for the last 4 mnths for 30 yr old forced air, hwh, dryer, range and BBQ (I use it year round) was only $562.00

Dropped over $600.00 from previous year. 1 year payback.

I have 2300 sq.ft, 30 year old 4 level side split witht he original window and doors (Including a 8' patio door that faces the prevailing winter winds.)

check you envellope. Your leaking like a sieve. I live in Canada, so I am likely close to your design temp.
