This article describes some of the pitfalls you may encounter. I have found that it's much more cost-effective to fix a steam system than to convert it. You'd be surprised how quiet and efficient steam can be when the basics are right.

radiators
I am going to be converting a steam system to fhw and I will be removing all the old piping. I plan on using as many of the old radiators as I can I was wondering in order to use the existing radiators should they be nipple connected top and bottom and have vent tappings at the top.Has anyone ever drilled and tapped a radiator for a new vent location. thanks for any advise you maight offer. hw conversion
Hi J A,
Yes, the radiator must have top and bottom connections between the sections. Some very old style steam radiators only have the connection between the sections at the bottom. These are not suitable for conversion to hot water.
Tapping for the air vent is not that hard. Find the boss on the radiator, start by drilling a small pilot hole, then increase to 11/32" drill bit to have the right size for the 1/8" tap.
Please be advised that you may encounter other difficulties with this conversion. There are many issues and concerns with changing a system from steam to hot water that you must be aware of.
