R-19 in the wall

After riping out some sheetrock I found that the previous owner stuffed R-19, 6 1/4" fiberglass in the walls. How much is it hurting my insulating values? Should I rip the rest of this out and put new 3 1/2 in, or just leave it?

The denser pack will reduce any air currents in the insulation. The thermal bridging of the studs to the outside sheathing, and the floor plate and header plates degrades the performance of any insulation by about +/-25% anyway.0 -
I agree.
The over-packing tendency will cheat you if you were expecting R-19 but you will be marginally better as Geoff said, than the R-11 to R-13 you normally would have. Not worth replacing, but worth taking the time to seal the vapor/air barrier if the opportunity presents itself.0 -
thanks - I'll leave it.0
