am I wrong

Do you think I am wrong in asking the "yearly tune-up" serviceman to lower the steam pressure down from 5 lbs on 1 pipe system. Gauge is an "Internal Syphon, 0 to 30 psi", this gauge does not return to 0, operates between 5 (off)and 10 (5 psi ?), hope I explained it correctly. Have 4 radiators on 1st floor, 1 radiator vent spits and vent at end just before the loop spits. Are they spitting because of the higher pressure? Or are they just bad, have to add about an inch of water in tube daily during cold weather. Finally spring, so not useing boiler now. Appreciate any thoughts. This is a service contract with the oil company

    You're not wrong

and that can be a cause of spitting.

A good start would be to get a new gauge and clean pigtail then based on that new information you can ask the right questions.

    Blow down

With all that water going in do you also blow down on a regular basis to flush out the control?

Second do you have mineral build up on the vent that spits ?

Lastly when the new gague and pigtail are installed i would skim to have a good boil and steam production

    If you're married - yes!

    Just kidding.

Absolutely - turn it down, down, down. Ran into one the other day that's not only being grossly overfired, it's set for 6- to 9-PSI at the pressuretroll. Two issues have the customers' attention: a CO incident; and very high fuel bills. Instead of testing, their service-contract provider simply cemented every crack, crevis and seepage point they could find to keep the CO stuffed inside the boiler.

Had they timed the gas meter, they'd have seen the overfiring issue (900K into a 400K combustion chamber!). Had they tested the combustion gases, they'd have seen the CO issue and been able to determine its cause.

Instead, they lost a long-time customer. They were darn near dead wrong.
