New Hire Practices

If the person is not a JP than he can hire on at my place without a good license. I run everyone through a drug screen and a insurance check to make sure they are eligable to drive. The drug screen will show you more about a persons personal habits than any other item I have found.

New Hire Practices
I am an HVACR Instructor and I would some opinions from you about new hires and drivers licenses.
The issue is we sometimes get students that have points, DUI or DWI on their licenses and I am sure you are all running their licenses before hire, we want to be honest and upfront with them about their chances for hire so....
when you look at an applicant what is your cutoff point in regards to driver license issues??
1 point?? 3points?? no to all DUI & DWI
thanks in advance0 -
license woes
If we have a candidate we like, but there is a history of infractions, we let our insurance carrier decide. If they will insure him, we would probably hire, but with restrictions. If an additional infraction would render him un-insurable, we won't hire. But if there is room for error, he would sign a disclaimer that he would lose his job if he loses his license. It's general a case-by-case call along with gut feeling.

so you let the insurance company decide, basically I guess they may also say, "if you hire him your rates will increase to ...." and you would look at that I'm sure
it is so different for each company it seems based on their insurance carrier, I know I've seen fellow employees let go for getting tickets in their own car on their own time

I also let my insurance carrier know. If they tell me that there would be in increase then I don't hire. Before I send it to my carrier I run my own DMV check and judge each on a case by case basis. Sometimes I can get a feeling about someone based on what that record shows.

I am all for giving someone a chance
but my gut tells me, where is the up-side compared to someone with a clean driving record?
Forget insurance for a moment, but what if your new hire, six months out, falls off the wagon, takes your truck, runs into a crowd at a bus stop. On your timeclock.
One of those nightmare moments that gives me pause. How are you protected when you knowingly hire a person with a history of behind the wheel irresponsibility?
One infraction in the distant past... maybe hire them assuming clean record for the duration. But multiple infractions? Your call for the quantity, but I would think once, not twice.

Our company
doesn't have "employees"- it's just my partner and me, and we're both insurable. I suppose this is one of the problems we'd have to face if we decided to expand.
But having worked with guys who have had substance abuse problems, I've seen how bad they are for business even if they don't usually drive the trucks. So I would be extremely reluctant to hire someone with such a history.

From the Oil Companies Perspective....
We treat all drivers as if they were going to handle an oil truck, even if they do not possess a CDL or Hazmat endoresment.
The insurance company will let us know, not so much if the rates will increase, but if they will even extend coverage to individuals based on their driving records.
I let the insurance company be the "heavy" if I have to turn down an applicant based on driving record.
This has not happened very often, as most applicants to oil companies (drivers or techs) already know how tight the driving restrictions are in this scenario.
We don't have helpers, so if you don't have a license (for whatever reason) I can't hire.....0 -
no tolerance
We can not add an employee to our policy if they have had a dui within a 3 year period. We have to have them(insurance co.) run the license prior to hiring. No exceptions!0 -
DUI
I owe a lot to one plumbing company that gave me a second chance when I lost my license because of a DUI when I was 18 years old. . . with a revoked license for 18 months they never once made an issue out of it, they only made me promise to get a CDL when I was able to so I could drive the water main trucks. Whose fault was the DUI? Mine of course - remember that we all do things in life that aren't the smartest.

We run a background Check and drug testing on all new hires.
Our insurance company Will actually tell us when someone is un-insurable. If I chose to hire them anyways , and there in one of my trucks driving it and have an accident I will not be covered by the insurance company period end of subject.
Any of you young guys out there pay attention as you can be the best mechanic in the world but unless you have a personal driver you may not be able to get a job if you have a dirty licence0
