Best way to check a crack in heat exchanger

The old timers used some oil of peppermint or wintergreen. Block the flue, put a few drops in the combustion chamber, and run the blower. If the minty freshness makes it upstairs the chances of a breach are good.

Found a leaking heat exchanger
On an older gas furnace: The heat exchanger was cool. Placed my hand on the flue gas ouuutlet while turning the blower on 'Manual". I definitely felt an air flow on the combustion side of the furnace.0
