how do I know if I have a mulitstage heat pump?

I have a new thermostat to hook up. It is for a singe stage heat pump. I'm not sure if I have a single stage or a multistage as there are 6 wires coming out of the wall. How can I tell which I have?

    Make/Model/and Serial #

Would be of great help. usually they are single stage, but there are also 2 speed or 2 stg. Lennox offered the 2 speed compressor about 12 years ago and some even use it today. Chances are that you have a 1 stg, but the mod # will comfirm this. Also, changing the T-stat in this case would be best left to the professional because ! miswired action can actually ruin your equipment.:)

  • Some of the new thermostats have cross reference sheets for the new to old wiring. You probably have a two stage system unless you have another way of heating or live in a very mild climate. Most heat pumps use the heat pump for first stage and have another second stage of heating. Most heat pumps work well to about 30 degrees outside. After that they need a back up heat to keep up. I would recommend leaving the thermostat to a professional also.
