Original Steam Piping Drawings

It hasn't for a long time. The radiator and its piping were in very bad shape so I chose to remove them. The supply and return piping ran from the house through a 2'x 2' tunnel about 25' in length. They were laid on top of the excavated soil surface and were subject to 80 years of moisture. We also plan to frame these, they are just appropriate pieces of art for the house. Thanks!

    Original Steam Piping Drawings

We recently had copies made of the original drawings prepared in the early twenties of our Mouat steam piping and radiation. We found these after moving into our home a year ago and I thought some of you might find these interesting. I would be curious of any thoughts and comments any of you may have. Thanks! Terry

The way it used to be done

Thanks for sharing these! Keepers suitable for framing...What a find those are.

Years ago I was shopped out to the Boston School Committee Department of Planning and Engineering. They had drawers full of drawings from the 1920's and 30's, ink on cloth, every letter of every type like every other, all by hand. Heating, ventilating, lighting, plumbing (hubs and spiggots actually shown!)

Beautiful, masterful and enduring. I sure hope they archived them properly. Speaking of which, I would get an archival quality porfolio (acid-free neutral stock) and speak to your local historical society or rare collection library on how best to preserve these. There was a spray called "Wei-to" used for preservation of paper documents.

    Outstanding documentation indeed.

I've seen a couple sets around here

for Webster systems, that actually were framed! They never fail to impress me.

Does the garage radiator still work?

    very cool..

its interesting to note the call out for the pipe pitches he wanted..and the measurements of the return air vents are interesting..very nice indeed..the quick vent he calls out for on the supply main end, are they still there? i have one in my collection..its really a radiator trap..its got a thermostatic wafer in it and was made for mouat by another local company , the ideal heating equip. co. very cool stuff for us steam junkies..what about the tri-tube return vents? are they still there?

  • mouat vent

    Hi Gerry,

I have a quad tube mouat vent in the museum display case here at the old supply house. Came out of a house in Greensburg, Indiana I am told.

    Best regards, Pat

i saw one still in place

recently..i made sure the homeowner knew very CLEARLY not to ever let that be removed from the system, since it has no moving parts..i had previously tested the tri vent and didn't know he made a quad vent till her house..she agreed to let me test its capacity tho, next time i go there..

    Hi Gerry,

I thought you might enjoy these being you have a history with Moaut systems. I'm sad to say the noted vents are long gone. They had been replaced with 2 Stay Rite Company canister style looking vents. I have since replaced those with (3) #2 Gorton's. The Stay Rite vents were made by another Cleveland Company, weren't they? The main vent to the garage was replaced with a Hoffman #2 (sphon air & vacuum valve, spelling per vent). One thing these drawings have shown me is how far off the current water is with the current boiler that was replaced sometime in 2000. Another interesting side note (at least I feel) is the client's name on those drawings was a son of a local family (Hattersley & Son's) owned commercial plumbing company, which began sometime in the 1860,s. They were supposedly the first union company and one of the largest contractors in our state at the time. Thanks for the interest. Terry

    yup stay-rite was local,

and you'll like this-- they were in the same building with mouat company.. do you still have those stay-rite vents? there was a business relationship between mouat, stay-rite, and idea heating equip. co. ... from what we can tell, ideal htg equipment company made many of the parts used by mouat and stay-rite..many mouat parts say mouat vapor heating company on a tag but underneath cast into the brass is ideal htg equip. co. ...we think ideal had the foundry and made things to spec, and also private labeled.. after all, mouat company only had 9 employees.. kind of obvious some did the casting for them..mouat eventually was sold to squires company..

    Thanks for the treat

This must be quite a cozy home. The breakfast area must be the best, being able to snuggle up to a nice warm radiator in the morning.

It seems there is plenty radiation in this home to bring it up to heat on a whim. Lots of EDR, I think I counted 769 square feet, including the garage. I know you live in a cold place.

    Keep warm.

Yes, I do still have the vents.

Would you have any use? You are more than welcome to them. Other wise I will most likely scrap them. Thanks again!
