sounds like a solar DHW preheatwould be right for you. Basically a tank and panel connected ahead of the regular DHW tank.
Heliodyne.com is another company that offers plug and play systems. the biggest job is locating and installing the roof top panels. Everything else is basic pipe fitting.
Head to Barnes and Nobel and pick up a copy of Solar Today mag www.solartoday.org. They have ads for a number of solar suppliers.
You are very wise to consider this energy form. Good luck.

Solar domestic hot water
I have a customer that is toying with the idea of installing some sort of solar to heat domestic hot water. There is only one system near here so not familiar with any systems, brands, etc. Is there any sites or manufacturers that you could point me to. I guess the solar panels would be the biggest question. I am sure I could come up with the other equipment. The house is approx 10,000 sq ft all radiant with twin Buderus boilers, twin 80 gal Buderus indirects, and Tekmar controls.0 -
solar
Veissman Manufacturing.com & solarThermal.com are two that come to mind. Probably lots more. Do a google search.0 -
there's a news group - "alt.solar.thermal" .also do a search on Yahoo for DHW solar system distributors and manufactures. Many companies sell the whole package which includes the panels, heat exchanger, controller, and tank. Below freezing you will probably use antifreeze. You would be purchasing pipe, insulation, hangers, romex/bx, ect. I have two houses, both with solar DHW. In one, the panels heat the water in the solar tank which then goes in the inlet for the propane water heater. In the other, the heated water in the solar storage tank goes into the inlet of the tankless coil on the boiler and also to the cold tap on a honeywell mixing valve. The water in these tanks ranges anywhere from basement temperature if there is no sun for a few days to 120/130 deg. They have been running for 20 rears. It really works. Good luck0
