Combustion analyzer

my test holes on sheet metal. I have seen some plugs on the market and have also seen people use furnace cement but I find the foil tape holds good and gives me good access for future testing.

Seen lots of holes on conventional draft left open to, no big deal due to the negative pressures and small opening.

    Combustion analyzer

I am a home owner and am curious how you pros use a combustion analyzer on a condensing boiler. Do you drill a hole in the PVC exhaust and probe it there with your analyzer? What do you plug the hole up with when you are done? I am going to call a guy in but I am just curious before he comes what he will do.

    Thank you

    What we currently ,are doing.

We like to get as close to the equipment as possible although it can be taken at the inlet/exhaust with possible eronious results. I actually drill a 1/4" hole and tap/ the hole to fit a 1/4" pvc threaded plug in and seal with a-little hi temp RTV silicone calk. This allows me to remove and re-test at any time I choose while maintaining a hi temp/sealed fitting. I like it and the inspectors give the OK to my method....That's In Buffalo, NY.

    The Vito and GB

come with test ports right out of the box.

On equipment that has no provision, we drill and tap the PVC and plug the hole when we are done.

    Many condensing boilers

have a hole you can borrow :) On the Weil Ultra and Lochinvar Knight you remove the flue temperature probe. No drilling or plugging needed.

If not, I like the drill and tap method for a good solid, reuseable opening. Much better than tape or silicone.

How about with tin? What are your favorite ways to plug these?

    We use

metal plugs and for the life of me I can't remember who makes them. We buy them at Sid Harvey and I know RE Michel has them as well.

I love when I drill a test hole in a "draft diverter" on a WH and the HO asks if I am going to plug it. I say "Sure! Want me to plug this one two?" as I stick my hand through the bottom of the "draft diverter".

    Yah...I know.

I use foil tape as well, but I have seen foil tape just loosly hanging from joints with the adhesive totally cooked off. Not sure how many years that takes, or if foil tape has improved. Seems to stick like a !@#$%^&!!!!
