    \"blowing off\" the boiler

I have a Utica steam boiler that is oil-fired. My question has to do with "blowing off" the boiler.

I know I'm supposed to drain some of the boiler water periodically to allow the sediment and sludge to escape. But how much of this water am I actually supposed to drain out? For the past couple of winters I've been draining the entire boiler and refilling it once a week or so because the water in the guage glass looks especially dirty after a week. I've heard you should do this once a month, but that seems too long. Am I doing anything wrong, here?

    1 time

every week you need to flush the Low Water Cutt Off If you have the type with a flush valve. Just flush untill the water is somewhat clear. Also try and do it when the boiler is running the boiler should shut down when you open the valve.

You don't want to drain the whole boiler that often. Steam boilers don't like alot of makeup water. The manufacturer has a strict amount of water that should be introduced into any given steam boiler.

Maybe the crud is coming from the returns? Have thayever been flushed out or inspected?
