Old bearing, anyone recognize?

is SAE 30 wt. Non-detergent motor oil. I thought about an additive to help prolong the life of the bearing. A replacement split-roller bearing is about $1800.00 wholesale. This school plans on geting rid of the steam and going to forced air sometime soon.

    Old bearing, anyone recognize?

This bearing is running alittle hot, seems to have issues with the oil wicking. I am gonna try to replace the wicking in the bearing, and see if that cools it down. Anyone worked on anything like this before? Shaft size is 4 15/16" (That's an 18" ruler, by the way)

Lucas oil stabalizer, we use it in all sorts if equipment including the racecar. Just use it unmixed, it will seem really thick but it works.

Have you ever heard of Energy Release? It supposely hardens the metal when it heats up and that will reduce wear, and increade efficieny, one time i saw a demonstration where they used a roller baring against a rotating steel wheel with engine oil and one with ER mixed with water, and they put weight to bind the parts together, the ER n water definatly had less wear.

Is that a Babbited bearing? It's possible the babbit material is worn and the bearing needs to be re-babbited and re-machined.
Back in the day (before roller and needle bearings) this was a common task. You probabally couldn't find anybody capable of making a mandrel and pouring new babbit today though........

    GM Engine Oil Supplement

is used to coat new camshafts to protect them during break-in and it mixes nicely with motor oil. Also, Hemmings Motor News lists several vendors who offer rebabbitting service.

    bearing wear

    David,

If the bearing is worn the shaft will not build up enough of an oil film to support the load. Your best chance will be to rebabbitt the bearing. Also, the round portion of the shaft looks rusty, which isn't good. Is it possible to remove the shaft to have this section ground so it will keep the new bearing surface happy?

    Sythentic oil

I too would try a 0w - 30 sythen. oil. I use Mobil 1 for everthing and have never had a problem. As to the wicking, if I remember the B&G course, the wick is a special wool that can't get charred or it won't wick oil up. And of course it must be kept pressed onto the rotating shaft. As the other posts suggested if the babbit is going get it redone before the shaft is damaged. The large elect. motor rebuild shops should know who does it.
