Outdoor reset control search

old dear customers who have a Burnham cast iron boiler about 8 years old. They are retired (and on a budget) and got quite a surprise when their gas bill came this past month. Prices have gone up and December was colder than usual. I want to install an outdoor reset control to help them cut costs but...the system is a 2 pipe with 4 zone valves and one of the zones goes to an indirect water heater. I don't want to burden them with an expensive repipe to make the indirect on a parallel circuit. Is there an outdoor reset that can reset the temps for the 3 other zones but go to high fire when the indirect's zone valve calls for heat?

    check out

the Taco 700 series. I have not used it yet,but I am very interested if anyone has, like Wayne I have customer that is now looking to reduce fuel costs on a system I installed a few years ago.

I think integrates into the SR zone relay and have that on priority for DHW.

    Thanks for the reply

I will check it out. I also think I can use a Tekmar 260 and make it work with a little creative wiring. If I may ask another question... Does anyone have a time clock that they recommend using with the Tekmar controls to initiate the set back contact?

    Intermatic

Makes a simple $30-35 digital timeclock that mounts in a Decora or GFCI style plate junction box. I use it to set back my DHW heater when I am not home and for lighting control. I am sure there are others out there.

    Yeesh!

You have expensive tastes Heatboy. These folks don't need the variable speed. (I think you must be funning me:) I've only installed one 311. Worked great though. I gave the customers a price for the Tekmar 260. Do the Intertherm water heater timers keep good time, or do they lose a minute hear and there. do they have a battery backup. Inquiring minds want to know. WW

you could just hook-up one of the these...

that's what i did. a prog t-stat is really just a timer with a spst switch - isn't that what you want? (just set it to the extremes so that it ignores temp like 40 or 90f for on & off). plus you get battery back-up & daylight savings time to boot.

    WW,

I think the 260 is a fine choice. Does it well and the price won't break the bank. JMHO....Chris

    Wayne...

I have a Tekmar 260 on my home and it works very well...Another less complex way I just did is an Argo zone valve control and the DPM-2 outdoor reset control..It does work w/ an indirect water heater on priority....simple yet efective...hope this helps.kpc

To avoid the expense of a fancy reset controller why not use a simple one and add a DPDT relay? Have the indirect zone operate a relay that bypasses the reset--that way the boiler will fire to aquastat setting. Once the DHW call ends the boiler will return to the reset setting.

If you use two 3- or 4-pole (4 pole are easier to find) relays you can easily set up that four-zone system for DHW priority with the space heating zones disabled during a DHW call.

Let me know if you want simple schematics.

    tekmar

use the 260 it has outdoor reset and prioritizes when the indirect calls for heat. if you dont want priority use the tekmar 256 will cost a little less if you are on a budget.

    Wayne,

A Tekmar 360 would work fine! You can still use the dry contact with a zone valve.

    Taco Outdoor reset

Singh, it does work with the SR but it needs to be the SR expandable control. This control also takes the plug in cards for more options. EJW

We have installed three 700 serires two two stage and one single stage. if you have a SRxxx-EXP or ZVCxxx-EXP end anyway they work great, my bigest gripe about the Taco controlers is having to carry a tiny screw driver.

    Taco ZVC404-EXP

The Taco ZVC404-EXP is an excellent candidate for your application. It is a great facilitator for wiring your system, two 40 VA transformer to power the valves, diagnostic lights for troubling shooting, dry contacts for optional circulator dedicated to domestic water, two isolated end switches for firing the boiler, and running a system pump. The PC700-2 outdoor reset control will interface with the 404-EXP by simply plugging it into the Molex connector. For your reference I have attached product information. If you have any questions contact me directly, or visit www.taco-hvac.com.

    Taco 700 series

Wayne I would take a look at the Taco 700 series control, we use them and have had excellent performance from them, and their product support is excellent. We have also used Tekmar and have had nothing but positive experiences with their products, the customer support with Tekmar is also excellent, Taco is readily available(more than Tekmar) over here on Grapeland. Good Luck.
