I find it works best with the slow reaction time and limited flexibility of a steam system

What is the best thermostat for a more than 70 year old steam heating system?
I have a Dayton Fuel Trimmer, Model 2E501B. I believe mine may have gone bad this evening. I turned it down from about 72F to 60F for several hours to cool the boiler to add water. When I returned the thermostat to 72, the boiler did not fire up, even though the temperature had dropped on the thermostat to about 67F. The pilots are lit on the boiler.0 -
You could use....
our VisionPro 8000 if you need a top-line touchscreen programmable. The FocusPro 6000 is a good alternative if you are on a budget, and still want a programmable. If you have cooling as well, these stats will control that also. If you want a non-programmable, the Focuspro 5000 is a great choice. All are compatible with steam, mercury free, 5 year warranty, very simple to use, and the programmables are EnergyStar rated. They are available from your local heating cooling contractor.0 -

If yoiu can't buy them and you can't install them why mention them0 -
t-stat
Be careful blaming the thermostat. What you have described may not be the stat at all, but a boiler that has shut down for some other reason. A plugged pigtail on the pressuretrol giving a false read, or a low water issue.
Thermostats are fairly durable, so I would look toward the system first. As a homeowner, I would not go much further than ascertaining a correct water level in the boiler.
After that I would strongly suggest bringing in a pro.0
