Piping

"Expert"

From "Ex" (a has-been)

"Spurt" (a drip under pressure).

The installation proves that anyone can solder a pipe. Go forth and do good.

    Primary/Secondary?

Cust. with 12yr.old Teledyne-Laars blr with vent damper concerned about high gas bill. Limit was at 140deg.and manifold was 4.6 IWC (there was plenty of rust). Adjusted to 180deg.and 3.5 IWC. My concern now is with the piping/pumping. Both circs. are activated by a hydraulic out-door reset. Seems like a bad idea for a small copper ht.exch. to have 24/7 flow for the whole season here in Mid-Michigan. Also, check out the piping scheme...is it worth changing?

I would at least make sure that

you were pumping away from the expansion tank. If the boiler circuit head is low (very low), you could leave the Circulator #1 in place such as is done for modular boilers all the time. But to make this effective, the radiation (secondary loop circulator #2) should be downstream of the closely spaced tees.

If both heads are high, I would move both of them, #1 downstream of the ET and #2 downstream of the incoming tee. The circulators would still affect one-another because they are in series. If they run at the same time all the time, and are comparable in flow/pressure, not too much of an issue.

Ideally though, I would make them two separate loops, decoupled completely except each loop would have a pair of closely spaced tees. A modulating control valve would bleed in water to the secondary loop (conversely bleed return water out of the loop back to the boiler, same thing).

Control this valve off of secondary loop temperature and keep the boiler loop about ten degrees F higher, modulated in parallel by outdoor reset, to allow control authority.

You could use a shuttle pump between the circuits but for what seems to be a small system I would use a control valve. Way to many circulators it would seem if you used a shuttle.

    My $0.02,

    Brad

    Try this

It would take some repipping, but may be worth it.

Thanks for the input, I'll see if I can sell it to the cust. Their cousin the "expert" installed this....
