I'll be looking at this tomorrow, having grown up accross from a farm, spent beaucoup time there, I'll re-charge myself with the "positive" ions in the air. I'll let you know.

I spoke with a contractor today who has had two 4 section steam blocks go bad in two years. I have not seen the latest one yet, not sure if anyone has had a similar application and how they've dealt with it.
Basically, they are using a steam boiler as a steam generator on a farm to process manure generating methane for an electrical generator. It is basically an open system, no return water coming back (thank God), using fresh water constantly. I see a ton of issues with corrosion, mineral deposits etc.
Is anyone aware of a way of dealing with something like this?0 -
Yup
Use a Stainless steel process boiler, as used in manufacturing. Use the proper water preparing equipment with it.
When you revive the guy with smelling salts from the price shock (ask me how I know), show him how cheap a new steam boiler casting is every few years. You'ld be amazed how many folks will prefer the cheap, no warranty, cast iron steam boiler over the expensive, permanant solution.
I think it has to do with profit margins. If it ain't food grade, stainless doesn't always win.

****,
I seem to remember a similar question and discussion on bakery(bagel/bread making) boilers a few years back. If your karma is good and the Gods are smiling, you may be able to dredge it up from the files. Good luck ! Chris0 -

There's one in Lost Art
on page 209, but the problem on that one was controlling the water level.0
