Removing air without bleeder valves

I am doing some work on the second floor of my house that required me to disconnect the baseboard heating system. I have reconnected it and went looking for the bleeder valve to bleed the air out of the system. Low and behold - there is no bleeder valve. I tried turning on the heat. The downstairs worked fine, but it would appear as if the air in the system is preventing the water from reaching the second floor.
Without a bleeder valve, how do I get the air out of the system. (besides the obvious, which is to add a valve).
A little about the house. 130 year old seaside cottage. baseboard hot water heat added about 40 years ago. Both floors are on one zone.
Thanks for your help.

a purge station?
Have you followed out your piping to make sure their is no purge station set up where the two loops tie together? Or is it possible to shut the downstair's zone off and drive it upstairs to bring the air back to the air scoop and hy-vents? There has to be some way for air to be removed from the system.0 -
base board bleeding
if you were to look or search close to either the return side or the supply side of your risers there should be an isolation valve installed along in series with a drain which will be positioned at a higher point than the isolation. is so and if the original installer did the right thing... close the (iso) and purge the system
this is very common in chicago here0
