how important is the firebox blanket in burnham boilers?

Hi wallies, I just finished cleaning both my Bock DHW and my Burnham V83 boiler.Last year a major oil company did it.I was not at all satisfied with their work as they hardly did any bushing and very little vacuuming. They also didn't bother changing the pump screens as they said they didn't "want the pumps to leak and they were probably OK anyway". Some excuse for shuddy work don't you think? Any way I decided to do the cleaning myself as I had done so on my old boiler for years. I bushed and vacuumed both systems and now they are as good as new. I changed the tank filter, the screens, jets and set the electrods. I carefully removed the firebox blanket and then went and stepped on it causing a slight hole which I re-enforced with fiberglass insulation underneath the blanket. Should I replace this or is it OK the way I repaired it? If I want to replace it where do I send for a new one? Thanks, Live/Learn

V83 Chamber Blanket
The Chamber Blanket is not an absolute necessity for the boiler to operate adequately. It is there to absorb some of the chamber resonance and to shield the flame from possible cold surfaces in the chamber. Patching it with fiberglass is not a good practice because the fiberglass will probably burn off. If you wish to replace it the blanket can be obtained through any Burnham distributor in your area. The Burnham part number is 82028035. Many of these distributors only deal with contractors though so you may have to obtain it through one of them. Hope this helps.

Thanks Glen for your for your speedy responce. I was actually pointing my question to you as I knew you'd have the answer but fiqured to throw it out on the "wall" anyway. You are a "light in the storm" to a lot of people in the trade. Keep up the good work! Live/Learn0
