It alway's amazes me to see the work you do Ron!! Not only does your work look incredible (per the norm) but you think of the guy's who have to come in behind you to service them!! Excellent!!! By the way, what's in the coke bottle? Didn't get started to early did you? :)

  • I found out about this project

through a serviceman buddy of mine who is a member of this Veterans of Foreign Wars , Post 9592 in Levittown . I already heard that one of our salesman was working behind the scenes to help the post out , but I thought it'd be a good idea to take a look and talk to my supervisor about the project .

Well , the wheels were already in motion without any help from me . Special thanks go to Burnham for donating a V84 boiler , and to my managers at Meenan who donated the material and labor for the rest of the project . And if anyone knows what the VFW is about , they understand this is a VERY WORTHY CAUSE .

As you can see this ol' Ford was dead on it's feet . The room itself was maybe 6 ft. by 6 , and behind the boiler was a sinkhole where the water main came in . The water main valve was buried behind the boiler with no easy way to shut it off . And the swampwater on the floor ? That was from an icemaker drain line .
  • The Burnham V84

3 zones , and we lifted it off the ground on solid blocks . We also rerouted the water main and valve for easy access on the right side of the boiler . We , meaning Sal , Tom and myself . Since we don't carry PVC fittings or pipe , we slipped some copper over the icemaker drain and routed that to the sinkhole behind the boiler - until they find a better way of handling it .

All in all this was a great project to work on . They asked us to come back sometime and join them for a few drinks and conversation . Me and Tom took them up on the offer and came back Fri after work . What an amazing group of people . The help and resources they give to veterans and their families in need made me feel good about what we accomplished .

  • My dad...

was teh Commander of a local post of the VFW, o rthe VFnW as my mother used to call it.. Thanks for helping out a very worthwhile organization.

And you really should get them to do someting else with the drain from the ice machine. It isn't a good thing having standing water anywhere. Other than that, par excellence job as usual:-)

Good story here, especially with the before and after pics. Are the pics high resolution, i.e. 300 dpi?

    If I may...

This image seems to be 72dpi, 800 pixels wide X 600 pixels High. For those interested, there is quite a bit of information stored in most digital image files. If using windows xp a summary of this information can be obtained (after saving the picture from The Wall to your hard drive) by right clicking on the image name and selecting properties/summary.

The full range of information stored in the image files EXIF data can be viewed using a program such as IrfanView, selecting Image/information and clicking the EXIF info button. A sample from the EXIF information for this image includes the following:

    ImageDescription - Sierra Exif JPEG
    Make - OLYMPUS OPTICAL CO.,LTD
    Model - C3000Z
    Orientation - Top left
    XResolution - 72
    YResolution - 72

    DateTime - 2006:04:08 10:59:45
    YCbCrPositioning - Co-Sited
    ExifOffset - 284
    ExposureTime - 1/30 seconds
    FNumber - 2.80

    And so on.

    Man,

I must be getting old. "the ole Ford"........geeze, I remember when those were new like yesterday!
I overheard a young kid in a supply house saying he was working on an old burner. I expected like a Winkler or Delco or something.
It turns out he was working on a Riello Mectron.
    What the.........:)

    An amazing group

The VFW and American Legion members have traditionally been made up of that wonderful generation of WWII and Korean War Vets who are leaving us on a daily basis. Whenever you have the chance to spend time with these people enjoy it as I feel there will never be another generation that will equal them.

    Wow

I was not aware all this info was encoded within a digital pic! Cool!

There was an error rendering this rich post.

  • The fix is in

They're knocking down the wall the icemaker drains from , and adding a whole new wing to the 2nd floor for the use of other not-for-profits that simply cannot afford the skyhigh rent and taxes where they were . Once its all done they're going to have a grand unveiling . I'll be there to snap some pics . Thanks alot Mark .
  • John

I am not sure how to check the dpi , but I resize the pics to 600 by 800 pixels so noone has to scroll too far to see them . I do keep the original full size pics on hard drive . I take the pics with the next highest resolution on my outdated 3.2 megapixel camera . I have to upgrade someday .
  • Me either

That is pretty cool , the camera is right , I'm guessing all the other info is right too . Thanks Gordon .
  • David

I really didn't give back much on this one . I was willing to donate my own labor , but my company went far and above the call of duty here . Makes me real proud to be associated with Meenan . Thanks alot Dave .
  • No arm twisting here

$1.75 bottles ? $1.00 drafts of 2 of my favorites - Yuengling and Harps ? Free billiards ? This is my new home away from home .
    Thanks Chris .
  • Yes

We are starting to see Mectrons on some of the equipment we replace . Not for nothing , but those old Ford rear flue heaters are outlasting every other brand oil fired . Not sure about the boilers though , we don't see em much around here .
  • Thanks Frank

Just to clarify a bit , my company did pick up the labor for me , Sal and Tom . Normally we work through Oil Heat Cares for a family in need . But after talking to the people at the bar , I'm very glad they were able to use the money that would've went to a new system to the people that need it most - current and retired members of the military and their families .
  • Haha

Naa , that was plain old Coke . The job was on a Thursday , I do my drinkin' on the weekends nowadays . Ain't as young as I used to be . Thanks Tom .
  • You're right

Hanging out with this gang was a privelege for me . Back in 88 or 89 we replaced a gas boiler at an American Legion in Bayside , Queens . It was for my old bosses uncle who was the Commander . Of course after the job we went up there to drink with the Vets . What an eye opener for a young punk of 19 . Back then they were mostly all WW2 Vets , and the constant theme was " War is Hell " . The stories were over 40 years old , but they were still vivid in their minds . I'll never forget that day .
