Speedpass

works at better than 50 on the eastbound I-276 (or is that I-476?)/Penn Pike Ext. before going over the Delaware Bridge to the Jersey Pike. All the others I go thru require you to slow. Slick technology & one size fits Maine to PA (and WV?) now. Beats tokens or coins.
Anyone remember when the Mass Pike sold books of discounted paper chits (might have been 20 or 30 a book -- toll taker'd tear one out) for the Pike Ext. from 128 to Boston -- maybe till early 70's?

Speedpass
As I was passing through tolls the other day, I was admiring the technology behind my speedpass. Then the thought occurred to me-(it may die of loneliness, I know)-I wonder just how fast one could go through the toll booth and still have the Speedpass work? My next thought was that SOMEONE here has probably had some experience with this (whatever would make me think that??). I am not condoning speeding through tolls, just wondering how fast this technology is.0 -
I suppose you could
try to speed through and get your picture taken... I think if you go faster than the speed of light you may outrun the signal which is about that fast...
Always marvelled at the signs to "go slowly through the fast lane". While pondering that, my mind cannot contemplate the intricacies of microcircuitry in a transmitter that size.
I am waiting for the day when they tell me I got on the Pike in Lee at Exit 2 and made it to 95/128 at X speed and give me a speeding ticket....0 -
Fast pass
Guy, There is one on the garden state parkway that says to maintain speed . We went through at 65. Its off to the side of the other toll booths. Jerry0 -
that is exactly why
I am afraid to buy a speedpass!
Once a month I drive from home (Allentown, PA), and take a trip out to Hermitage, PA to see my future wife (that is if I don't screw up) over the weekend, and I admittedly go a wee bit over the limit.....

Solved that problem, Cosmo
My Susan bought one for me
And if your honey is like my honey, you will not screw up. You just won't!
So take a good break in between, stop for coffee and make it up on the second leg0 -
Well I know
that it works above 30mph as a relative got a notice that if she keeps doing it they would take her Speedpass away.
The equipment also detects whether I have the trailer behind the truck or running solo.0 -

Hey Cosmo, next time through the A-town exchange or any on the PA turnpike check your ticket. It has a time stamp on when you got on the turnpike and it is recorded on the outer end as well. They could give you a ticket on that if they wanted. I would be more worried about the state cop waiting for you to go 6mph over.0 -
ain't been bit yet!
Don't want to jinx myself, but so far so good!

speed
Most of my passages through speedpass lanes require going through the former toll lanes, which are narrow. My Chevy truck is not. Mirrors are expensive.
Interesting point about Big Brother watching though. Didn't they time you on the Maine Turnpike years ago? I remember my Dad telling of getting the "on" ticket, driving like crazy, then stopping for half an hour before paying out, in order to avoid a ticket.0 -
EZ Passing.
EZ Pass is a huge time saver, but invariably, you see some dumb-**** who didn't see the flashing yellow lights visible from a mile away and get in the EZ Pass lane that wants to pay in cash. That can make for some interesting toll booth memories!
Going over the Verrazano, G.W. or through any pike exchange is painful enough. I can't imagine waiting in line to actually pay the toll.
Patience is not one of my strong suites, I guess. There was an error rendering this rich post.

Speedpass
I was out in Chicago a couple of weeks back there's a
center flow through lane we average 75mph. No need to
stop to take your money aaaa.0 -

I would have to agree that most of the reason for the low speed limits through the old toll lanes converted to EZ-Pass have to do with their narrowness and the remerging into 3 or 4 lanes after them. As already mentioned, many areas have removed the old booth lanes and now have overhead pickups with normal width lanes that allow you to go right on through at 55 mph. I see them at the beginning of the Jersey turnpike as well as on the Garden State Parkway.
I remember once when I first started using EZ-Pass and was a bit skiddish about it, getting on the Mass Pike in Sturbridge. I did not see the green light come on possibly because I may have gone through too fast. Once on the Turnpike westbound I called the toll-free number to report not seeing the light come on so I wouldn't get hit with an end-to-end toll and the young lady on the other end of the phone stated that she had me just entering the Mass Pike in Sturbridge in a Black SUV. Now that's scary....talk about "Big Brother" watching!
