$19.95 Furnace Inspection

in my area the Carpet Cleaner Man has gone into Duct Cleaning. The flyers claim they will pull out your blower and clean inside the furnace and check your heat exchanger while in there. Supposedly there are monster sized dust mites that bite out pieces of your flesh while you sleep; They even have a magnified picture of one. Very frightening. You must hurry, though, because the spring cleaning season is just around the corner and then you must suffer until next winter-blah blah blah

Get real.

I always love these ads. A local company that cleans ducts has a coupon special in the mailer pack: $19.95 for a furnace cleaning and inspection.

Now let's break this down, err, forget about it. Why bother trying to break down a loss leader? Imagine if this company had to walk away with 50% of their customers paying $19.95. They'd be out of business. In order to make any money there has to be some parts swapped out and "fine print" fudging -- pointing out that conditions have to be ideal for an actual $19.95 charge.

Yet homeowners still swallow the bait -- and usually the hook it was attached to. Funny, as long as people still fall for that crap we will see the $19.95 coupons. Maybe it is time for the "anti-$19.95" coupon. I'll help design it.
