It's like whistling - you just purse your lips, and blow

    Boiler Pressure

I just finished "We got steam" and decided to try some of my new found knowledge out. When I looked at the Pressuretrol, the cut in was set at about 6 psi. I cranked it down to about 4 and it performed just as well. I then took it down to about 2 before going to bed. I woke up the next morning and the house was 58 degrees. I cranked it up to about 4 and the furnace started. Inside I noticed the differential was set at 3. I moved it down to 1 as suggested in the book. Why did lowering the cut in to 2 cause the system to not operate. Thanks.

You put the control out of sinc when the cutout was lower that the differential. the cutout must always be set higher than the diff. Set the cut out around 1.5 with the differential at 1 and you should be all right.

If you have the type of PressureTrol that goes down to 0.5 psi on the outside adjustment, then that is cut-in, and internal differential adjustment for cut-out is additive (ie, 0.5 psi cut-in, differential 1 for 1.5 psi cut-out).

It sounds like you might have the other type with 2 psi minimum cut-out, and subtractive differential cut-in. So if you it set for the minimum 2 psi cut-out, and 3 psi differential, the cut-in would be a vacuum (not going to happen). In that case try 2 psi cut-out and 1 psi differential, so it cuts out at 2 psi and cuts in at 1 psi.

If you have the type that is externally adjustable down to 0.5 psi, maybe your pigtail is plugged, making your PressureTrol ineffective. When I bought my home with 1-pipe steam, the connection for my pressure gauge was plugged up.

The PressureTrol says cut-in on the outside and goes down to .5. Last night, I changed the differential to 1 and the cut in to 1 and it ran fine. I'm going to see if I can now get it lower. If the pig tail is plugged, how difficult is it to clean out? Thanks for the response.
