New Boiler/Automatic water feed

That makes sense. Thank you. What happens to all that extra water as it gets warmer?

New Boiler
We're having a new boiler replaced on our one pipe steam system. The conctractor is recommending a bolier that has an electric low water cutoff. He is also suggesting an automatic water feed. With an electric LWCO, there is no weekly blowdown, therefore how necessary is an automatic water feed?

Your free time
The question is do you want to be attached to the boiler everyday by the manual feed umbilical cord? A one pipe steam boiler uses water and will need to have water added every day as it gets colder. Unless you want to run your life thinking about the next time to add water you should have an auto feeder.
And just because it has an electric LWCO doesn't mean it doesn't need to be blown down. Sediment still accumulates in the return line and the bottom of a boiler. Both should be flushed at least monthly.0 -
Auto water feeder
Make sure you ask for a water feeder with a built in water meter or have one added to the feed line. This is very important so you can monitor excessive water usage. Too much makeup water can shorten the new boilers life considerably.0 -
LWCO
A properly sized steam boiler should not require water every day.
If this is the case i would start looking for leaks either in the piping or at the radiators themselves.
In that type of situation a water feeder will mask a problem because nobody will pay attention to it at all.

I don't like them
I see alot of problems with feeders leaking through and flooding. And, for you families safety I would have 2 low water cut off's, one elect. and one float. So, I would skip the feeder, put 2 manual valves in series on the 1/2" fill line and plan on checking the gauge glass at least once a week but whenever you are near it. The biggest thing I see skipped is skimming the new boiler until it's clean, do yourself a big favor and pay for at least 4 hours labor for skimming.0 -
