    Vent calculation

Here are length and diameter measurements steamhead asked for in order to calculate size/quantity of steam vents for mains...see photos attached.

Header: 4inches dia times 5 feet

    First leg:

2 1/2 inch dia times 40.5 feet, THEN continues 2 inch dia times 40 feet.

    Second leg:

2 1/2 inch dia times 30 feet "THE FIRST 30 FEET OF FIRST LEG"
tHIS TEES OFF to 2 inch dia times 54 feet.

Each main has an original old (Trane) dark gold color installed vent (see photos) Tnx for your help. PS: How about sizing of the return which is 1 inch dia and runs parrellel to mains so has same length dimentions. at the end of the return is I believe a Hoffman (light green in photo) vent/trap..

Gonna bump this to see if Steamhead picks it up.

    Bump.
  • OK, the first 30 feet of 2-1/2

    serves both legs, right?

Put a Gorton #2 at the end of each one.

In the photo I can see a Hoffman vent and then a Trane vent next to it. Are these vents for steam mains or dry returns? How many radiators on this system?

    First 30 feet

of 2 1/2 inch does serve both legs (teed off at 30 feet to serve SECOND leg) The dark grey vent in upper far left is old original trane and serves the end of one (FIRST) main leg (SECOND main leg has its own same type old Trane vent). The shiney new lime green is newly replaced Hoffman 75 which serves the end of both return legs (returns meet (are joined) and are served by this single Hoffman "MAINS" vent. This may not be correct size/type.

There are 16 total radiators, 7 on FIRST leg, 9 on SECOND leg. Two story 75 plus year old Tudor/Colonial with excelent insulation.

Weil Mclain Model A-B-572 steam boiler installed aprox 30 years ago. 915 Sq feet steam rating, 219.1 MBH water.

on the return should be fine.

Note that in some cases excessive heat in the boiler room might cause the #2 vents to close prematurely. In this case you would need to relocate them further from the boiler, or do something about the excessive heat.

    Excessive Heat, funny

you should mention that..lol. The whole basement was in fact very warm. This was because the old insulation had been at some point removed and the (at that time) illinformed homeowner liked a warm basement where his pool table room is.. :-)..Siunce embarking on a total system repair he has become more informed through the generous efforts of the wall and RTFMing the various mfg specs. He has since recently restored most of the missing insulation.

So to recap, a single Gorton No2 on the return in place of the Hoffman 75, and a single Gorton No 2 for each of the mains legs in place of the existing old original Trane vents. Is that correct Steamhead? Thanks for all your help. Alfred/Jim
