Setback T-Stat

It is pretty clear to me that if you are gone for a couple days that there is a cost savings by setting back the T-stat. Some of my customers want to go up and down two or three times a day. At what point does setback become preatical/impractical? We see -40F most years. Thanks for your input.

2 up/down cycles
I was doing 2 up/down cycles in the night(6*) and work hours(3*). I had double the gas use for that month with fewer degree days. I now have one setback of only 2* and am slightly lower consumption than last year. I do believe that daily setback for a few hours is oversold by the tstat makers.
