Replace both and get them matched. Get as High efficiency as you can afford. Make sure the inside unit has an expansion valve and variable speed air blower. Pay up on the outside unit to get a 2 speed heat Pump. All of these things will pay you back in comfort and lower operating costs. Good luck. WW

Heat Pumps
I have a home warranty and they have authorized that I get a new heat pump and that is all. Should I pay for a new handling system out of my own pocket since the system is about 20 years old? Should I ask for the money the warranty company would pay for replacing the heat pump and contract some other contractor on my own? Please help.0 -
What type....
of heat pump? Air to air, water to air? I would check a couple things before making a choice: the inside coil should be replaced at the same time to provide an ARI matched system to get the best energy efficiency and does the local power company have a minimum seer/eer rating to allow you to get any rebates on the purchase. 20 years is a long time on a unit that provides heating and cooling, but now is the time to consider what the operating cost will be to YOU in the next 20 years. Perhaps you can kick in any extra to get the best energy value, but in the least you should get a rated, matched system. Best regards.0 -
Type of Heat Pump
I must have air to air. It is a Bryant Carrier model. I'll check into the seering.0 -

The outside section of a heat pump system is just the half of it. Why would you leave the(its life is over)old air handler and install a new outside unit. Plus if the inside coil is bad it will kill a new outside unit. Go back to your insurance company with a couple of quotes and demand to get both the inside and outside sections replaced. heat pump replacement
with the cost of any work on the sealed system in the refrigeration industry very high you would definitely replace the entire sealed system and put your new components at the same installation date.0 -
Home Warranty
From what I have heard most home warranty companies use their own contractors and only pay for what is wrong, in your case the outside unit. Everything is done on the cheap, bad pump you get a new pump period. They really aren't what they are cracked up to be.

I agree with the other posts. You should get both the indoor and outdoor replaced at the same time. This way you will get a matched system and realize the maximum efficiency. The difference will be well worth it. Also the older component will not be breaking down and nickel and diming you. Extreme cases a mismatched system will cause poor efficiency and poor performance. It may work adequately in the summer and not work in the winter or vice- versa or not work at all. With the prices of energy, do it right.0
